An open letter to #OccupyWallStreet

Thread:

Sometimes I think I may have something to contribute to #OccupyWallStreet. Sometimes I don't know. The only people who would know are you, if you've seen what I'm talking about. So, well, here goes. Sorry that I'm talking about my own stuff. I don't know any other way to let you know about it, and it may be worth your time.

I'm not trying to answer the question about "What's the message?" The message is "A fair deal for the 99%!" Obviously. Read below the fold...

Common Dreams: The Rise of the Second-String Psychopaths

"[Kurt] Vonnegut felt that his country had disappeared right under his – and the Constitution’s – feet, through what he called “the sleaziest, low-comedy Keystone Cops-style coup d’état imaginable.” He was talking about the Bush administration. Were Vonnegut still alive in the post-Bush era, he would not have felt that his country had returned."

Anti-Gay "Conscience Clause" -- at the UN too

Alone among major Western nations, the United States has refused to sign a declaration presented Thursday at the United Nations calling for worldwide decriminalization of homosexuality. ...

U.S. officials expressed concern in private talks that some parts of the declaration might be problematic in committing the federal government on matters that fall under state jurisdiction. President-elect Barack Obama has picked the widely respected housing commissioner for New York City, Shaun Donovan, to be the secretary of housing in his cabinet.

... Mr. Donovan was considered a national innovator in capitalizing on the strong real estate market to find financing for low-cost housing. He held to a middle ground between free-market forces who opposed government controls and liberal groups that believed only government and nonprofit groups could be counted on to provide housing for the working class.

What’s really inside Baucus' health-care white paper?

"... start dissecting exactly what this supposed Democratic consensus document is all about. First, is it really the consensus plan—the plan that consultants have focus group-tested and carefully crafted to avoid ruffling special-interest feathers and to soothe the middle class, assuring that it can keep the insurance it has now if it wants? ... Spend two hours reading it, he says, and “you’ll see there is no consensus.” ... Sift through it, and you’ll also find a lot of on-the-one-hand, on-the-other-hand language that really doesn’t offer much of a road map. ..." Baucus' HealthReform2009 here Read below the fold...

Josh Smacks 'Em With A Carp

Thread:

Ooooh, nice smack from Josh Marshall on the attempt by conservatives to run away from Bush. Smack some more, Josh. Smack, smack smack:

Balanced budgets and shrinking the size of government hasn't been part of conservatism -- or to be more precise, Movement Conservatism -- for going on thirty years. The conservative movement and the Republican party are the movement and party of deficit spending. And neither has any claim to any real association with limited or small government. Just isn't borne out by any factual record or political agenda. Not in the Reagan presidency, the Bush presidency or the second Bush presidency. The intervening period of fiscal restraint comes under Clinton. Read below the fold...
