Hong Kong

I Love The Country, but not the Party

I'm headed back to Hong Kong next week. I just missed Sarah Palin's foreign policy debut, but I'll be getting back in time to catch the "celebrations" for the 60th anniversary of the Chinese revolution. HK should be low key, but in China they are literally moving heaven and earth to make everything perfect.
A friend sent me this music video from a local Hong Kong band called "My Little Airport." They've written a pretty cool birthday song for China:

Hong Kong

AP:

Hong Kong's pro-democracy camp has won more than a third of seats in legislative elections, retaining its veto power over major legislation.

Wow. Imagine that. A part in the legislative branch that exercises veto power. Good thing Hong Kong never went into Iraq, or they might already be outta there, and that would be bad.

Funny old world, isn't it?

Elections I Really Care About, Hong Kong edition

I'm spending this week working my tail off for the re-election of this guy, Leung Kwok Hung

Also known as "Long Hair". He's running for a seat in Hong Kong's 60-member Legislative Council (LEGCO)

Hong Kong is the only place in China that has (some) free, popular democratic elections, thanks to the deal brokered when the U.K. ceded Hong Kong back to China in 1997.
