This too shall pass: The death of redmeat rhetoric & The birth of common sense

Whether it is because of Barack Obama, or not, I don't care. I'm just happy to see the very Bushwellian-sounding "War on Terror" (much like the "War on Drugs") fading away into obscurity. It's always been one of my pet peeves since Bush drilled it into the public lexicon back in 2001:

WASHINGTON – The "War on Terror" is losing the war of words.

The catchphrase burned into the American lexicon hours after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, is fading away, slowly if not deliberately being replaced by a new administration bent on repairing the U.S. image among Muslim nations.

Monday Morning Rhetoric

We have kewl kommentorz here, and someone directed me to this list of the "top 100" moments in American political rhetoric. Nifty! And look how many of those great speakers have been Dems! Again, nifty. Just thought it makes a nice resource for people thinking "where have I heard that before?" more often these days.

Bush: I believe, I believe, I believe, I believe (repeat 21 times)

Let's parse Bush's presser again:

1. "[BUSH] We must not fall prey to the sophisticated propaganda by the enemy, who is trying to undermine our confidence and make us believe that our presence in Iraq is the cause of all its problems."

2. "[BUSH] I'm confident because I believ the power of liberty will defeat the ideology of hate every time."

3. "[BUSH] I believe that the radicals represent the few in the Middle East."

4. "[BUSH] I believe the majority of people want to live in a peaceful world. "

5. "[BUSH] That's what I believe."

Anyone remember the Steve Martin routine on this?

Belief? Or Delusion?

Liberal: The USA has fifty states.

Conservative: No, it doesn’t.

Liberal: Yes, it does. The USA has fifty states.

Conservative: What about Guam? What about that Guam, huh? Or the
Virgin Islands?

Liberal: Those are territories, not states. The USA has fifty states.
