William Rivers Pitt: Obama/Congress & a 10-Deployment, Maimed Vet

I came across an article by William Rivers Pitt entitled “The Sugar Makes the Poison Taste Sweet”. I am posting a powerful excerpt from it in which Pitt lets his anger rip about the shameless exploitation of a 10-deployment, maimed vet by Obama at the end of his 2014 State of the Union Address. Obama, the Liar, Spins the SOTU

I didn’t watch Obama’s State of the Union address on television tonight. My stomach was not strong enough. (Reminiscent of how Bush’s TV appearances also induced nausea in me.)

Just a little while ago I abandoned the balance of my cappuccino in an upper East Side diner because Obama’s voice from a wall TV screen in the back ambushed me. The manager/owner hustled over to the front cash register to process my check.

“I came out tonight to ESCAPE Obama!” I scolded

He wagged a finger in my face angrily. “Hey, I’m just watching to see his nose grow!” Read below the fold...

Libby's Political Stew: Behind SOTU Speech's Razzle Dazzle

Here are some “realpolitik” excerpted takes on Obama’s State of the Union Address from Glen Ford, Norman Solomon, Barry Grey, Pepe Escobar, Matthew Rothschild:

Glen Ford of BAR in “Obama’s State of the Corporate Union”:

It was an impassioned performance by a cynical politician who offers little but corporate tax incentives and continued austerity. Barack Obama peppered his State of the Union address with up-tempo buzzwords about illusory “progress,” but the president’s substantive message was that he is determined to complete the austerity bargain he struck with the Republicans in 2011. ...

Obama’s jobs program is almost entirely a corporate tax incentive scheme, to bribe corporations to send home the jobs they sent offshore, where they have also hidden tens of trillions from taxation – a subject not deemed worthy of mention in a national discussion of shared sacrifice and patriotic obligations.

Obama's SOTU: Military Mayhem & 3d-Wrld US Job/Wage Bullshit

Thread:

Barry Grey of wsws has the grimmest but most reality-based analysis of Obama’s Tuesday night State of the Union message.

Grey:

The speech was actually one of the most reactionary State of the Union addresses ever delivered. Obama placed his “blueprint” for the US economy within the framework of a chilling celebration of the American military and its criminal activities around the world. Among the achievements he cited were the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan and the bombing of Libya and murder of Gaddafi. He spoke with particular pride of the extra-legal drone assassinations in Africa and the Middle East and concluded with a paean to the Navy SEALs who murdered Osama bin Laden.

SOTU: Reaction to Jill Stein and the Green New Deal

Since I provided some reaction to the SOTU, I thought I might also provide some analysis of Jill Stein's version of it. I won't dignify Mitch Daniels's reply to the President with an analysis, however, because it's simply not worth the electronic ink to comment on that nonsense.

By and large, I really liked Jill Stein's Green New Deal speech, and I think I'd be much happier if she were in the Presidency then I am right now. Dr, Stein, is really direct and straightforward, and she seems to genuinely care about the condition of working people and about protecting the constitution and its guarantees of liberty. Her sincerity shines through and she seems to lack the guile of the major party candidates. Her program seems to be a synthesis of the WW II New Deal and Green Agendas and I strongly support the idea that we need both right now. Here are some quotes and comments. Read below the fold...

The SOTU: He Hasn't Learned Anything More About the Economy in the Past Year

Last year I prepared for the SOTU by speculating about the “fairy tales” the President would tell about fiscal responsibility, fiscal sustainability and the debt/deficit problem. That series ended here, and here. Yesterday's SOTU covered many subjects, but once again, the President paid lip service to the irresponsible religion of fiscal responsibility. Here are some comments on the parts of the SOTU related to it. Read below the fold...

Paul Ryan On Limited Government

In my last two posts I reviewed the deficit reduction aspects of Paul Ryan's Republican response to the SOTU. But Ryan also placed considerable emphasis on the idea of “limited government” in his response. In this post, I want to evaluate what he had to say on this theme.

So I’d like to share with you the principles that guide us. They are anchored in the wisdom of the founders; in the spirit of the Declaration of Independence; and in the words of the American Constitution.

They have to do with the importance of limited government; and with the blessing of self-government. . . .

Paul Ryan's Deficit Reduction Fairy Tales: Part Two

Here's Part Two of my textual analysis of the deficit reduction portion of Paul Ryan's Republican response to the SOTU.

Then the President and his party made matters even worse, by creating a new open-ended health care entitlement.

What we already know about the President’s health care law is this: Costs are going up, premiums are rising, and millions of people will lose the coverage they currently have. Job creation is being stifled by all of its taxes, penalties, mandates and fees.

Paul Ryan's Deficit Reduction Fairy Tales: Part One

Many of my recent posts have focused on fairy tales I thought the President would tell in the SOTU and also those that he did tell. The reason for this is that I think people on the left have a greater need to be informed about Obama's fairy tales, then they do about Republican fairy tales, since they are automatically skeptical about what Republicans say given their 40 year history of systematically lying about reality every chance they get. How Much of Reagan's 1982 SOTU will Obama Steal?

Thread:

I read that Obama was going to talk about cutting taxes and deficit reduction tonight, and I wondered if I had time-warped back to 1982. Here's what Obama's Beloved Daddy, Ronnie Raygun, said in his first SOTU.

This passage jumped out at me:

And so, the question: If the fundamentals are in place, what now? Well, two things. First, we must understand what’s happening at the moment to the economy. Our current problems are not the product of the recovery program that’s only just now getting underway, as some would have you believe; they are the inheritance (emphasis mine) of decades of tax and tax and spend and spend.
