Here is the Bush Administration when the scandal broke recently:At the White House, spokesman Tony Snow said he spoke with the president yesterday about Walter Reed and the president told him: "Find out what the problem is and fix it."
He said Bush "first learned of the troubling allegations regarding Walter Reed from the stories this weekend in The Washington Post. He is deeply concerned and wants any problems identified and fixed." (The stories were published Monday and yesterday in the Monitor.)
And here is President Bush December 20, 2004, when defending his then-Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld:
"I know Secretary Rumsfeld's heart; I know how much he cares for the troops," Bush said, adding that Rumsfeld and his wife, Joyce, often visit military patients at the Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington and the Naval Medical Center in nearby Bethesda, Md.
You got that? Rumsfeld was with the patients, and obviously just didn't notice the crap falling from the ceiling, soiled carpets or multi-legged creatures living among our wounded soldiers. Read more…

The hero of today's witnesses, soft-spoken Annette McLeod talked of cruel case workers and manipulative bureaucrats denying veterans' access to much needed medical care. Giving one shocking example after another, McLeod described one instance where a Walter Reed staff member tried to reclassify her husband as mentally retarded to prevent him from receiving necessary, but costly medical care. The way the Repubs treat vets is like a poker tell.
There is no upside for them to neglect and mistreat returning troops, since the moral values party and its silver-spoon friends never pay the tab for government services.
Even if they don't -- and they don't -- give a rat's ass about the young people they send to kill and die for no good reason, building shining veterans' hospitals would be good P.R.
What prevents them from doing it is their utter contempt for fairness and their revulsion for those who are vulnerable and not well-connected. Read more…
