Taibbi gets it on Obama's mortgage settlement scam

Here:

[T]his deal not only doesn't end robosigning, it officially makes getting caught for it inexpensive. Shame on me for ever thinking that might be a good thing.

And it's very encouraging to see Taibbi quote Yves.

Does he though?

Yeah, he finally gets that something bad is going down. But twice before he gets to Yves, he conjectures that the real problem here is just fatigue and lack of stamina by criminal justice officials ("Really this looks like America's public prosecutors just wilted before the prospect of a long, drawn-out conflict"); which reason he just pulled out of his butt, as far as I can tell.

There's a distinct lack of agency and responsibility in Taibbi's confession/article. The banks will make it a big long fight, and sigh, that's just the way it is. He can't conceive that there was pressure brought to bear by Obama's feds on local prosecutors' to get on board with this toothless garbage, that this outcome is not accidental, or that Obama (or any of our politicians) never had any intention of even attempting either justice or help for anyone but their corporate masters.

I don't see that he gets it all. It's great that he quotes Yves, esp. if it means clickthroughs to Yves site by Taibbi's audience in particular, but I don't read anything but blind squirrel here.

I think I agree with you

I was shocked when he wrote his first analysis of the deal; I never though Taibbi would succumb to the Kool-Aid; but there he was, doing it in front of our very eyes.

The biggest lament here is the failure to realize that there is no longer a system of law in this country. Corporations, the FIRE sector in particular, are now more powerful than the gov't. They write the laws, and enforce them only when convenient or profitable.

This is fascism writ large, and even Taibbi isn't able to see it.

Good reading! Favorite quote: What could go wrong?
Beyond war, inflation, the end of the technology/productivity wave, and financial collapse, we think the most potent and short-term threat would be societies demanding a more ‘equitable’ share of wealth.
