That means he has to buy his own insurance, a Blue Cross Blue Shield policy that costs him $584 a month and carries a $10,000 deductible.
On Tuesday morning, he listened for a long time as Missoulians discussed health care reform at a listening session at St. Patrick Hospital sponsored by U.S. Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont.
The hearing ranged broadly over the possibilities for reform, but what clearly resonated for McArthur was something Baucus' chief of staff, Jon Selib, said a couple of times.
Discussing why a single-payer system of health insurance wasn't viable, Selib made reference to the more than 150 million Americans who are covered by some sort of employer-provided health care.
"A lot of people like that," Selib said. When the time came for questions, McArthur stood up and asked a simple question. Looking across a standing-room-only crowd of about 275, he asked how many were happy with their employer-based health insurance.
Fewer than 10 people raised their hands.
"The number is bogus," McArthur said. "It's not working for 95 percent of us."
Whatever single payer activists are doing in MT, we should do.
Making the continued censorship and suppression of single payer news by HCAN and its K Street cohorts so very destructive. I mean, MT Governor Schweitzer endorses the Canadian single payer system while warming up for Obama and that's not news?!

I love that they did the 'raise your hand if you're happy' thing
I've always wanted to do that. It's so simple and effective.

The MCM belongs to corporatists--who does Obama belong to?
He doesn't seem to see us as his natural constituency. He's bravely talking about being a one term president if that's what it takes to get his wondrous health
careBig Insurance Parasite Protection and Profitability plan passed....So, does he have a golden parachute from his corporatist bosses?
This is a great find, lambert. Your piece about Schweitzer (still no reference to that on FDL as of late late last night; I haven't checked today. I left a comment aoout it in the Dean book salon post, but it didn't come up in any searches.) was put into a comment by Gray at OL's disloyal WH staffers' post by Lux.
The censorship is so pervasive it makes it absolutely clear that the censorship of facts and opposition to the Iraq Invasion was no fluke. It's a clear feature of the Mainstrean Corporate Media (and its wannabees). Thank ceiling cat for Moyers and Amy Goodman. And for bloggers who dig and dig for nuggets of reality.
