Tell your Gov. and state legislator, DON'T WAIT FOR OBAMA!

DCblogger's picture

States are pushing ahead with their own reforms instead of waiting for the president to act.

Colorado's Bill Ritter (D) is a typical swing-state governor in these most atypical times: overly cautious, predictably equivocal -- you know the type. Upon getting himself elected in 2006, he promised to pass legislation that "provides every Coloradan with access to some basic form of health insurance and health care by 2010." One year later, with America gorging on a presidential hoopla, Ritter backed off the pledge because, as the Denver Post reported, he believes America should wait for President Obama to act.

States are bankrupt, how can they afford health care?

That's a serious question.

Saying we need to work the states is, to me, setting the bar lower than the federal public option. States can't print their own money so can't run deficits. They are also struggling with poor ratings making it hard to issue bonds to raise money for the short term.

The states route is very risky because a program that has to be cut because of bankrupt states will devestate federal reform hopes. Besides, I think health care should be a fundamental right that the fed accepts as a right.

well

you would have to read the legislation to know. Clearly the legislators have considered that aspect.

Worse yet, I live in Texas, and the damn Lege

is out of session until 2011 except if Rick Perry calls a "micro session" to pass the sunset safety net bill the Republicans killed with their calendaring shenanigans.

Out of session until 2011?`

Holy crap!

If there is any consolation, it'd have to be that they can't screw anything up for another year and a half.

In Texas it's a part-time job. If it's your only job, you can

qualify for food stamps when it's not in session.

I kinda like it, actually. Limits the damage they can do the innocent bystanders.

Sounds a little like the Stuart monarchs.

Pa, Fl

Have short show up sessions where they argue and steal.

I wonder how much these guys get paid and what their expense accounts are?

How is this possible?

Could you explain how it's out for all of 2010? Part-time or not, that doesn't sound right. I mean, they still pass legislation and such, right? Maybe you mean that there isn't a requirement for a full session? I'm honestly confused.

But, we've always been at war with Eastasia...

Good reading! Favorite quote: What could go wrong?
Beyond war, inflation, the end of the technology/productivity wave, and financial collapse, we think the most potent and short-term threat would be societies demanding a more ‘equitable’ share of wealth.
