The atheists are in charge. Now what?

Right-wingers will doubtless (and they are doubtless, aren't they?) think I'm talking about the Democrats who control the new Congress.

Alas, as far as I know, every man and woman in the 110th Congress — including each and every donkey — subscribes to a monotheistic faith.

So we're talking hypothetically here, thanks to some interesting questions Frank raised in comments at Martian Anthropologist:

If you made the laws for the country how would you handle these issues? Are churches allowed? Are there any limits to what they can teach? Would freedom of religion be enforced? How would churches and donations to churches be taxed? Would the government discourage religion or would it be strictly neutral? Could churches be sued for false claims (healing or prosperity in exchange for a donation)? Could churches advocate a political party or candidate or issue? I am asking because I am curious what an atheist run country would be like.

Here are my own quick takes:

  • Definitely no ban on religion
  • Definitely a strong separation of church and state — no "In God We Trust," no "Under God" in the Pledge of Allegience (which was shoehorned into the Pledge in the McCarthy era), no government funding of "faith-based initiatives"
  • Definitely no tax breaks for religious groups
  • Definitely yes on suing for fraud
  • Quite possibly investing government funds in encouraging people to be humanist realists, to treat each other as people and not as heathens
  • If churches become totally "unspecial," with no tax breaks or broad cultural taboos on criticizing them, then I would lift the ban on them endorsing candidates

WWDD (what would Dawkins do)? And what would you do?
