The fabulous invalid

Good read in this week's New Yorker on the newspaper business.

You know, I'd feel a lot better about the demise of the old newspaper business if the Kool-A-Listers* and the new media properties hadn't completely shat the bed this election cycle.

In fact, along with reinstating the Fairness Doctrine, why don't we bring back local newspaper monopolies? Because I'd sure rather have them as opposed to having to rely on Mr. Stubble or Arianna, both of whom seem incapable of distinguishing between the news, the Op-Ed page, advertising, and the minor celebrity of being a pundit. Ah, the sweet smell of success....

NOTE With the notable exception of Lord Eschaton, even now, even now.

Good reading! Favorite quote: What could go wrong?
Beyond war, inflation, the end of the technology/productivity wave, and financial collapse, we think the most potent and short-term threat would be societies demanding a more ‘equitable’ share of wealth.
