OK, so there's another debate that I'll be watching tonight. (Actually, I'm having a debate watching party.) Since it starts soon I thought I might post the drinking game rules so those north of the border can use them if they wish. I know that most of you will be watching the VP debates, but I just think that the PM debates are so much more amusing. I mean, this time May (Green Party candidate) will be there! Hilarity ensues! And Giles Duceppes is always a good time. A 5 person debate is so much more fun.
Anyway. I'm sure I or Mandos will come back and tell you about it, but for now, for those who wish to participate, there will be some rules after I set this up for those not paying attention.
Layton=NDP (my personal favourites)
Dion=Liberal
May=Green Party-not generally included as one of the "major 4"
Duceppe=Bloc Quebecois
Harper=the devil, current Conservative
PM who abuses knitwear and hates the arts (and just about everything I like). Minority government leader. Shifty eyed evil.
This list was compiled from rules from the last PM election cycle and from the "Canadian Indecision" group on my knitting site Ravelry.
Take a drink whenever Duceppe:
Starts talking about things not releated to the question
Takes over Layton’s turn to speak
Speaks french for no apparent reason
drink whenever layton mentions boardroom tables and/or kitchen tables.
drink whenever harper infantilizes/effeminizes dion.
drink whenever one of the party leaders accuse harper of being pro-alberta and/or pro-oil companies.
drink when Stephen Harper sounds smug
drink when May or Layton make a grandiose promise they'll never be able to fulfill.
drink when anyone completely ignores the question and goes off on an unrelated rant
Take 2 drinks if:
Harper calls the Green Shift "a tax on everything"
Harper or Layton accuse May of being a Liberal
Dion says "stimulation"
anyone blames a previous government for something
Someone brings up Harper's lack of a platform (they haven't released one yet-election's on the 11th)
3 drinks if Harper makes vague (or overt, basically any) reference to a group (or province, *coughNFLDcough*) that he doesn't need to get elected
start drinking whenever anyone mentions the sponsorship scandal and don’t stop until (presumably) harper shuts up.
If anyone agrees with Harper chug the rest of your drink (or a new one and yes you still have to do it if you're crying)
start doing shots when elizabeth may brings out the bong.

how about when they call Harper "Bush" ?
; >
We had to amend the rules slightly
It took Duceppe what, 6 minutes? Yes comparing Harper to Bush means a drink.
Twice people have brought up the fact that the Conservatives haven't released their platform yet (election's on the 14th, yo). So take 2 drinks whenever someone brings that up.
I love Layton: “Where’s your platform? Under the sweater?” *SQUEE*
And I also should say that if I lived in QC I would totally vote BQ.

Well, that's better...
... than "Is that a platform in your pocket..."
[ ] Very tepidly voting for Obama [ ] ?????. [ ] Any mullah-sucking billionaire-teabagging torture-loving pus-encrusted spawn of Cthulhu, bless his (R) heart.

i like Layton the best too--is he doing well?
i would be NDP if i were Canadian.
pretty good, in fact
Layton is of course being Layton. It's a good coalition. I'm really happy that May is included in the debates. She's really good too and a lot of the time it's 4 against 1. Though Duceppe is the show stealer. I love him. I would so be BQ, if in QC.
Though Layton just killed me by in one 45 second spiel mentioned: Harper's lack of a platform, the sweaters (3 drinks per sweater reference), the kitchen table AND the boardroom table.
Layton's now switching between attacking Harper and Dion which gives me hope that Dion may be the PM. He is actually wiping the floor with Harper. My friend is liveblogging it here: http://edwardiansisterhood.blogspot.com/
(But it should be over at appx 20:00 PST)

Harper has been wearing sweaters to soften his image
And every time I see him in that damn sweater vest commercial..... I snorted cider through my nose when Layton made the first comment. The article I linked to in the post (this one) is about how Mary Walsh (comedian) staged a bonfire where they were burning the sweater vests.
"For God's sake, does he think that putting on a blue sweater-vest is going to make us think, 'Oh my goodness, what a kind-hearted, cosy, cute little PM,' and forget all about the fact of his soul-sucking, evil work of putting 14-year-olds in jail for the rest of his lives?" said Walsh, referring to the Conservatives' call to treat youths accused of serious crimes as adults.
The Canadian Leadership debate was so much more dynamic then the 1-1 Presidential debate from last week. And you have people who will say things that no politician here would ever dare say, because it wouldn't get them elected, but even if it's not for PM they'll still create a bloc in Parliament that will have the power to block the devil if he gets in on a minority government yet again. (Please IPU NO!)
When the question was about the arts, which the harper government just announced budget cuts for, the moderator actually asked all the other leaders if they thought the Conservatives were barbarians! HA!

when do you guys vote?
soon?
I can't believe that about barbarians! hysterical! (and they would never ever ever say that here--here, whatever conservatives say or do is always serious and ok, sadly)
Federal elections on the 14th
but early voting starts tomorrow even though the Conservatives have failed to release a platform. For me I then have the US ones (but WA is by mail in ballot *phew*). Then there's the Vancouver municipal elections on November 15th.
(And provincial ones in May!)
Isn't that awesome? And that was from the moderator! He did keep referencing not wanting to lose viewers to the VP debates, but seriously, why would anyone want to watch those instead?

And by the way
The MP in the riding I vote in, Libby Davies, is a shoe in (everyone loves her in Vancouver East) and she's NDP so I'm voting for Layton.

coolio
riding is such a cool word--as if they go by horseback or stagecoach or something : >
(it's so much better than precinct or district)
Online
Is there any of us south of the border, here, can view this?
But, we've always been at war with Eastasia...
You can try
CPAC tomorrow. They have the French debate in the video on demand section and a snippet (that changes when the page reloads) on the home page. (And it works on both sides of the border).
CBC.ca live-streamed it so they should also have it up tomorrow and try the drinking game, it's fun! (I suggest some food and popcorn.)

It sucks
The community directly adjacent to mine gets CBC, but our provider doesn't carry it. If I lived in Detroit, this wouldn't be a problem.
But, we've always been at war with Eastasia...
Missed it
I'm busy getting ready to go to Canada tonight for a couple of weeks, so I will actually get to vote.
Try the links I gave
It was really good. Most people are saying that Elizabeth May won the debate, I think there were a few rounds that Dion won, but I must say I'm really glad she was there-she was awesome.
Luckily I'm an hour away from Vancouver so hopping back is really easy for me. I just have to do the passport switch at the border.

how come you have both?
(and get me a Canadian one!)
because i rock!
Though I think I have to give one up so that I can claim my Italian citizenship (2nd generation) since having EU status is definitely a plus.
But we can get married in the meantime. (It's legal in the great white north.)
