In adamantly refusing to declare waterboarding illegal, Michael B. Mukasey, the nominee for attorney general, is steering clear of a potential legal quagmire for the Bush administration: criminal prosecution or lawsuits against Central Intelligence Agency officers who used the harsh interrogation practice and those who authorized it [Bush], legal experts said Wednesday.
So it’s come to this:
A nominee for Attorney General can’t testify truthfully before Congress because if he does, the [cough] President who nominated him might be prosecuted.
Bush makes Nixon look good, doesn’t he? At least Nixon didn’t turn us into a nation of torturers.
And of course, the current Village makes the Beltway of Nixon’s time—maybe even the Beltway in Clinton’s time—look like the paragon of disinterested statesmanship and high-minded courage. Gack.

This of course would be WHY Mukasey was selected and
why NO Bushevik nominee should be considered for confirmation ever again.

Re: Mukasey & Waterboarding, Torture, etc...
I blogged a little about it yesterday.
Me? A Quick Study, But A Slow Learner
That, and his expansive views of executive power
You’ve got to give Bush credit, really. He’s incredibly persistent; ferocious, really. You can’t give him anything. The only thing to do is to get him down on the ground and start stomping (metaphorically, of course). It would be nice if the Village could see this; all the talk about being a lame duck and legacy is just deployed tinsel; in reality, his legacy is the destruction of Constitutional government, privatizing vast swaths of it to cronies, and the infestation of what remains with Christianist
operatives and moles. And all the Democrats are doing is tinkering round the edges.
We. Are. Going. To. Die. We must restore hope in the world. We must bring forth a new way of living that can sustain the world. Or else it is not just us who will die but everyone. What have we got to lose? Go forth and Fight!—Xan
