Yeah, it’s like Kremlinology back in the day, isn’t it? Where a bunch of dour-looking** hatchet-faced old guys all in ruthless bureaucratic infighter costume would line up on the missile-reviewing stand in Red Square, and we’d try to figure out what was really going on by who was smiling, and who stood next to who. Good times. Why is that?
But let that pass. CIA analyst Ray McGovern’s hat is making that krinkly sound:
[Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity] member Phil Giraldi, writing in The American Conservative
, earlier noted that Karl Rove has served as a counterweight to Vice President Dick Cheney, determined as Cheney seems to be to expand the Middle East quagmire to Iran.
It seems a good bet that Rove, who is no one’s dummy and would not want to have to “spin” an unnecessary war on Iran, lost the battle with Cheney over the merits of a military strike on Iran, and only then decided to spend more time with his family.
As for White House spokesperson
PonyTony Snow, it seems equally possible that, before deciding he has to make more money, he concluded that his stomach could not withstand the task explaining why Bush/Cheney needed to attack Iran.Blow
One reason I like this theory—if “like” is the word I want—is that it explains the otherwise inexplicable simultaneous farewells of Rove and Snow.
So our former colleague, operations officer par excellence Robert Baer, reports (in this week’s Time) that, according to his sources, the Bush/Cheney administration is winding up for a strike on Iran, that Bush’s plan to put Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on the terrorism list points in the direction of such a strike, and that delusional “neoconservative” thinking that still guides White House policy concludes that such an attack would lead to the fall of the clerics and rise of a more friendly Iran.
Hold on, it gets even worse: Baer’s sources tell him that administration officials are thinking that “as long as we have bombers and missiles in the air, we will hit Iran’s nuclear facilities.”
Wait, can Bush do that? I mean, it’s not like the Democrat Party pre-capitulated and already passed the authorization for war with Iran, right? Oh, wait….
Readers? Is this theory plausible?
NOTE OK, our guys try to smile. But that’s only for the cameras.

What a world
This Rove theory isn’t the one that’s NSFW.
Roviculous!
An attack on Iran would be either genocidal or suicidal. Bush can’t simply take a whack at the hornet’s nest while his armed forces sit vulnerable on neighboring land and water. So that part of the theory isn’t plausible because they must be planning something bigger.
As for the theory that Rove has finally found a war he doesn’t like, I doubt it. He’s an obnoxious, bellicose chickenhawk who has run out of legal options for prolonging the Bush regime. He’d rather be on the inside of the bunker when this thing blows, but he’s probably continuing to subvert the Constitution from the outside.
But then I really don’t know what makes these mutant humans tick.
I can buy the idea that Rove was a counterweight
Just sayin’.
“A small group of thoughtful people could change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” - Margaret Mead
Something bigger
Like a nuclear attack on American soil that will immediately be blamed on Iran? Specifically, the Revolutionary Guard, which we designated as a terrorist group about a week ago?
But I still believe
And I will rise up with fists!!
If I got a dollar for every
If I got a dollar for every “We are gonna attack Iran” post - I’d be a millionaire by now.
Folks: It doesn’t matter how much Cheney et al want to attack Iran, it ain’t gonna happen.
Such an attack would be geo-political suicide.
Well, suicide for who?
So far, Iraq has worked out very well for the loyal Bushies. Bush is still in power, and all of them have their pasty white chickenhawk asses firmly planted in fancy chairs provided in the various winger think tanks. Plus the relevant corporate transhuman entities made and/or stole billions of dollars. So where is the “suicide,” exactly?
Or are you imagining these guys have the country’s best interests if not at heart, at least factored into their calculations?
Or that they care how many niggers and little people die?
We. Are. Going. To. Die. We must restore hope in the world. We must bring forth a new way of living that can sustain the world. Or else it is not just us who will die but everyone. What have we got to lose? Go forth and Fight!—Xan
Paul -V-, I sincerely hope
Paul -V-, I sincerely hope you’re right, but what makes you think that this crew will not commit geo-political suicide ?
Are you perhaps saying that some other outside system will prevent Bush/Cheney from doing what they want ? If so, what outside system ?
i confess to having had this thought
when i first heard the news of rove’s departure. it doesn’t make me happy to read ray suggesting it has merit; he’s no fool. i don’t need to go foily for this to be disturbing.
Their agenda is being manipulated by a lower one...
This ’administration’ is co-opted and covertly co-ordinated by peopple/beings who WANT geo-political suicide. They want massive death and destruction. It feeds their power structures. The only process that has any power over this is one that will never be believed by the masses (now) and can be helped by everyone who wants to see happiness be shared by ALL beings. Remember that these ’people’ in the white house are really controlled by much darker forces than even Cheney could evey muster and the innate goodnes of every being Can stop them if the truths are acknowledged and then as direct and indirect groups, people share their Will more and more directly and indirectly, without fear and without attachment ; with Full Internal Focus their mechanism do stop.
spread your Grace whatever it is for the benefit of ALL
I don’t think Rove is at
I don’t think Rove is at all about providing “spin”, though I think he’s much better at providing “dirty tricks”. I don’t think there would be a huge downside for him. I think the real reason is that these vermin keep showing up from one administration to the next. Rove just wants to wait out the tough times, the lame-duck low poll numbers times, so he can return, like in one of those Halloween movie sequels, to terrorize us again by being someone else’s toadie.
Ari Fleisher is back!
Froomkin’s chat:
They’re like rhizomes, these Republicans. You pull one up above ground, and under the surface they divide and put up two new shoots for the one you uprooted.
But what’s a good guy like Froomkin doing quoting Politico, anyhow?

Think Caesar & Napoleon
The real reason to attack Iran is to stay in power - or keep the Republican party in power. They need a serious scare to get votes, or on the way outside, possibly to overthrow the present government. It’s a small step from president to king or emperor, and we all know how much the Bush Administration respects and reveres the Constitution. Perhaps Rove & Snow couldn’t stomach dismantling the present form of government.
Cromwell wanted to do it; Napoleon, Caesar, & Ptolemy did. If you want a worst-case scenario, it doesn’t have to be nuclear. Cheney always did want to be a kingmaker. Power corrupts; and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Long live Mad King George IV. :o/
And speaking of Caesar...
See Shane-O and Digby on Digby on the American Family Council. They aren’t just trying to shove the Overton window right, they want to shove the whole building right the window’s in right into the next county. Thanks to the miracle of Google caching:
Good to know.

He ain't Caesar
Besides, no self-respecting redblooded American wants to move to Iraq anyway. But the wingnuts are looking for a place to put all those Mexicans who keep coming north…
My take is simple: Enough Democrats are in the tank now, and Rove is no longer necessary.
…for the rest of us
