Bookworm, Run 2=Chuck?

From wiki:
"As with many of Vinge's later works, "Bookworm, Run!" deals with intelligence amplification: Norman Simmons, the bookworm of the title, is a surgically-altered chimpanzee with human-equivalent intelligence.

"As part of an experiment, Norman's brain has been given a wireless link to an enormous database. By accident, he is given access to the United States Government's main database....

"Vinge has said [1] that the "important" sequel to Bookworm would have featured the first human with amplified intelligence; however, when he attempted to sell such a story to John W. Campbell, Campbell rejected it with the explanation "You can't write this story. Neither can anyone else.""

Rainbow's End technology

"I can well believe that some of the software and interfaces that (Vinge) describes will one day become commonplace."-- Ann Wilkes

this is so Unfair! /weeps/

if you only knew what else i have to deal with right now...

anyway, self-pity aside: read Vernor Vinge. yes, some purists will call him a "libertarian." and they may be right. still...

science. imagination. beauty. the love of the mind. i'm literally crying right now i don't have the time to do him hommage. oh, goddess. if only i could write like he does. or his ex-wife. just read "a deepness in the sky." just read it. you won't be sorry.

/back to job related email mess that i can't avoid/

i hate our world. whatever happend to the Life of the Mind? i know, it's lost. but for Vinge, he seems to be enjoying it. as he should. he's better than all of them, other than Butler and Tepper and a handful of others. if you read his best, you'll never call sci-fi "juvenile" or "short sighted" or "simplistic" again. i can't endorse him enough. i hope this encourages at least a few of you to check him out.

you might have sold me

i've been looking for a new author, but had grown out of my scifi stage [other than occasional re-readings of douglas adams].

How about we run this again--in like a month?

We can link to here too...is there a better time for everyone?
