There are no truly liberal voices left on teevee, as far as I can tell. I could be wrong, but it seems to me that it's the easiest project in the world to point out that when it comes to teevee, conviction is for sale, and only fools put their hopes in the "liberal champions" found there. There are real heroes out there, how nice it would be for them to receive 1/10 the attention we foist upon political celebrities. I'm glad there is at least one "liberal voice" on teevee news. But I'm rather Marcusian about all that; I think Keith is there to be the exception that proves the rule/gives moral legitimacy to an otherwise evil process, if you take my meaning.
Oprah, Keith, Susan, that guy from that really kewl socially aware rock band I used to listen to in the 80s...it's more or less the same deal. If entertainment voices are the best minds you can come up with, and are the people your movement looks to for "leadership" and daring and insight and analysis, well... You're fucked.
Surely there are some real heroes out there who deserve at least as much of our attention as the folks on teevee. Isn't that a freedom new media types can still enjoy? Some days, I wonder.

That's the same smear I've always heard about Al Franken. He's an "entertainment voice" and therefore irrelevant. After all, you look at the world's heroes, none of them were original or interesting, much less funny, I guess. The moment a hero is given a voice is the moment they die.

that's news to me. but then again, i don't follow al franken. i don't know what keith is, but i do know that cillizza is an ignorant asshole. do you think i'd invite him to front page blog here, time and time again? if not, why do you think keith is worth defending?
scar, my point is that people on teevee are paid to say what they say. one cannot ever be sure that they actually believe what they are saying, because the paycheck is directly tied up with making people believe that you believe what you are saying. how is this different than our current pols? not much. but that's not what matters.
what matters is that there are many, many pools from which we can make compete and eventually select competent candidates for offices at all levels. almost none of that group- that being the most qualified and informed- is going to come from the current group of people employed and well known in the SCLM
. because, almost by definition now, SCLM people are willfully ignorant, uninformed, self-serving, uncritical, and even sometimes, completely uneducated.
progressives can and should do better, as they pick their leaders. for a change, if for no other reason, let's not elevate and give policy decision making to people who are famous because they sound and look good talking about sports. let's find our heroes elswhere, in real life, and not on the HDTV. is that so much to ask?
