Today's single payer post: the politics of Medicare for all

Atrios on the subject of Social Security

One camp includes people like me who think the system is financially sound and it isn't a pressing problem. More than that, no matter how fiscally sound it's made to be long run, conservatives and the Right won't stop trying to destroy it. Then there are the group of people who believe the system is something to worry about, at least a bit, and that the way to end the Social Security debate forever and destroy prevailing "IT'S DOOOMED" Beltway conventional wisdom is to put enough more money into the system so that's 100% sound 4evah.

One of the reasons the Half Vast Right Wing Conspiracy is so successful is that they are so single minded and can sustain an attack over a period of decades. Another reason they are successful is that they almost never have to play defense.

The campaign for HR 676 is the first major push back in a long long time. What we are proposing is the abolition of an entire industry that serves no purpose and is only a drain on the system. Succeeding in this effort will put the fear of God in the entire HVRWC. It will demonstrate that Americans cannot always be manipulated into opposing their best interests.

In some ways it is better that Obama has not embraced this. Without a Presidential candidate pushing this, it becomes a debate on the merits of the proposal itself, and here we stand on firm ground.

That is why it is so important that next Thursday's National Day of Action be a success. I won't be able to go to any of the events; so I am doubly grateful to those who will be able to demonstrate. Please post about your experiences. Please link to any press accounts of the day's activities. The people who organized this have given us a tremendous opportunity. We owe it to ourselves to take advantage of it.
