james carter replied to reallyivy: i'm flattered that you took the time out of your busy schedule to say mean things about my grandpa.

rt = retweet, which means repeating someone else's tweet verbatim, and which you can do with or without adding your own additional comment. in this case james carter retweeted all the part to the right of the letters rt and added his reply at the beginning [the part to the left of the rt]. sometimes people rt and add their reply or comment after [to the right of] the original tweet, usually with some kind of separator, like | or / or \ between them.
