Two EPA officials purchase beach house with Conoco VP. What kind of a threesome was it?

Must have missed this one. NPR not teh suck on this one. Steve Curwood from Living on Earth"

The latest allegations involve two top environmental regulators. Former Deputy Interior Secretary, J. Steven Griles has been under investigation in connection with the Jack Abramoff lobbying affair. Now it turns out that Mr. Griles and his girlfriend, Sue Ellen Wooldrige, purchased a million dollar beach house with Donald Duncan. He's a vice president of Conoco Phillips, the nation's third largest oil company.

This is just a little crass, even for the anti-Democrats, eh?

Not that there would any sort of quid pro quo, no no no no, everything is extremely legitimate:

Until last fall Ms. Wooldridge was also the top Justice Department official for environmental enforcement. And she is now under fire for signing a consent order that would allow Conoco to delay payment of more than a half billion dollars in fines and expenses to clean up a polluting oil refinery.

Just a coincidence, I'm sure. Fortunately, the Department of Justice [snicker] is on the case.

Oh, and probably just a threesome for greed. Generally, Republicans have "other priorities"--unless abuse of power is a possibility, of course.

I am not amazed

That this isn't blaring on every news channel. This is huge news. Well, it should be at least. Henry Waxman, I hope, has plans for a hearing on the matter.

I'm shocked... SHOCKED!...

... to find a kinky enviro-petro menage à trois under the Regime of Honor and Dignity! Did they eschew the Astroglide in favor of a "mineral-based lubricant"?

Well, digging into Griles first

(appropriately enough given his background in mining), this dude is an old fuck who had no business dumping his wife and taking up with this young DOJ floozie. (He's listed as married at the time of his initial Interior appointment.)*

However his tour of whoring under Bush is far from his first experience in being a bagman between extractive industries and Gubmint: he was providing these services at least as far back as the Reagan years:

Griles was the Assistant Secretary for Lands and Minerals Management from 1984 to 1989, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Land and Water from 1983 to 1984 and Deputy Director of the Office of Surface Mining from 1981 to 1983.

Best as I can figure so far his main turf was keeping the Indian trust money situation tied up.

This little kerfluffle with Conoco-Phillips getting off the hook for the half-billion in cleanup costs for some refineries, which they agreed to to get EPA off their backs until it came time to do the actual, like, work, when they said "Oh dear, we would really rather not have to do this right now, would that be all right then?" seems to have been more the Wooldridge connection. The big bux is the Indian trust money.

Found a hilarious speech he gave--to tribal leaders no less; this is not my field so I have no idea if these are legit folks or Uncle Tom(ahawk) figureheads--on How They're Really, Really Gonna Fix It This Time...Really! which I know will shock everyone reading here to find out was, well, actually, sort of a....fib.

More later maybe. Sorry to have been sort of absent of late but it's Lambert's fault--I got over to the library the other day and they actually had that "Dark Materials" book he's been flogging and damn if the thing isn't actually pretty good. Got through the first one though and it seems to be the longest, so will try to get the rest of it knocked out tonight and tomorrow.

Unless of course you have the investigations finished by then, indictments served and impeachment resolution ready to roll....well, yeah, I know, it's a lot, but see watcha can do, hokay?

*[Update, looks like I may have conflated two appointment announcements; he's listed as "married" here which is the earlier/Reagan gig, see below. However this bit confirms that his pre-Federal activities appear to trace to Virginia, so seeketh there for his patron in crookery is my guess.]

blind leading the blind

Hell, Clinton was married - howbeit to a shemale - yet corked his intern.

Hypocrites all.
