The Rotenberg Center is the only facility in the country that disciplines students by shocking them, a form of punishment not inflicted on serial killers or child molesters or any of the 2.2 million inmates now incarcerated in U.S. jails and prisons. Over its 36-year history, six children have died in its care, prompting numerous lawsuits and government investigations. Last year, New York state investigators filed a blistering report that made the place sound like a high school version of Abu Ghraib. Yet the program continues to thrive—in large part because no one except desperate parents, and a few state legislators, seems to care about what happens to the hundreds of kids who pass through its gates.
Autistic children? Sure sounds like somebody thinks they're terrorists. Go read the whole sickening thing at Mother Jones.
Makes you wonder whether some of the people in our government either went there, or sent their own kids there, doesn't it?
Oh, by the way, your tax dollars fund this crap.

The other side of the story
Ms. Gonnerman’s article “School of Shock,” which appears in the September/October issue of the Mother Jones magazine, is an entirely one-sided and biased account of the court- and parent-approved behavior modification therapy used at the Judge Rotenberg Center to successfully treat, without drugs, severe (sometimes life-threatening) behavior problems of children and young adults with special needs that have not responded to any other form of treatment. For readers who would like to hear the other side of this story, please see http://www.judgerc.org/ResponsetoGonnerm...

is that shock treatment has been discredited.
Taser deaths in the US have exceeded 100.
The kids in this article are subjected to shocks similar to those delivered by tasers.

Mr. Israel: What's the budget of your center?
And whence cometh the dinero?
What's your salary? That of the Good Doctor?
Sounds like boot-camp with electrodes...Have you had the 'treatment?' Cuz at least with analysis, analysts usually have to go through what they will ultimately provide in the way of a service.

shock thearpy
I understand the frusteration of hopelessness that comes with extreme cases of behavorial problems. Sometimes it feels like there is no hope. My son is the tender age of 5 and displays behavior that compares to the nature of a cerial killer.
The thought of my child being shocked, even when he enters adulthood, makes me sick..... I could never inflict physical pain such as this on someone I love.
I understand there are extreme cases, my son may be one of them, but how far should behavior modification be taken? I have not researched shock thearpy in depth, to see all the pros and cons, but with the posability of death from this type of thearpy I feel that it should not be performed.
I am sure the families and team of doctors who conduct shock theary have considered that the risks are great, but I ask of these families and professionals If an individual dies, your flesh and blood dies as a result, do you want it on your concience? I feel that doctors, in any feild, can not just chalk up human life to "we tried our best" or "I am sorry for your loss." I do not feel that parents or guardians should want to put their loved ones threw this pain.
I found myself saying, it is for his own good, when I would spank my son, or loose contorl myself. In truth it was because I wanted him to stop so I wouldnt get so angry. Sometimes when I do certian things in the best interest of someone else I did it selfishly to benifit myself. So ask yourself this (if you are participating in shock thearpy for your family member) are you doing it becuase you cant handel the behavior anymore?Do you want the person to stop so he/she dosent get hurt, or are you afraid he/she will do harm to others. If everyone but your loved one is the main consern then do you realy love this person at all, since you are not putting he/she first? Most people I have encountered act out, even in adulthood, because they feel unloved.
If your answer is yes your are doing this selfishly then you should reevaluate why you have chosen to accept shock thearpy as acceptable behavior modification.
So, who is this for? You or the one you say you love?
