Via McClatchy, a vacuum at the top:
When Obama, the party's new leader, learned of the plan's rejection, he spoke about Washington almost as if he weren't a member of Congress.
"Democrats and Republicans in Washington have a responsibility to make sure that an emergency rescue package is put forward that can at least stop the immediate problems we have so we can begin to plan for the future," he said.
He didn't say how he might lead or what role he'd play. "Step up to the plate," he told Congress. "Get it done."
And a vacuum in between Nancy's ears:
His party's leaders in Congress also threw up their hands, as House Speaker Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and others bragged that they'd delivered a majority of the Democratic votes, even though that wasn't enough.
"The Democratic side more than lived up to its side of the bargain," Pelosi said, lauding fellow Democratic leaders for "getting 60 percent of the House Democrats to support a bill which isn't our bill."
Er, wowsers?
Nothing -- absolutely nothing -- could be politically safer than opposing George W. Bush. ... So Monday's rejection of the bailout plan is not a catastrophic political defeat for George W. Bush; he has no political standing, no political future. But it is a vast and humiliating defeat for the Democratic leadership, across the board ... Now the Democratic elites have had their collective head handed to them on a platter. It is a dish most richly deserved.
You know, I've always heard that revenge was a dish best served cold.
But this Chris Floyd guy is changing my mind!

lambert,
that chair you're using to hit 'em must be in pretty bad shape by now. :)
Huh??
Did I see 5 committee chairs voted against a bill Nancy wanted? She had the votes, she didn't twist any arms.
Tell me folks, are the Republicans hero's now for not voting for this thing?
And wasn't Obama taking credit on ABC's Sunday morning's show with George?

"Now the Democratic elites
And if they would only lose on November 4, they would have their collective asses handed to them, too.
Then WE would get what we deserve... Hillary in 2012!
Someone give that man a cigar
And light it with a blowtorch:
Spoken by The Prescient One on April 28, 2008.
Tell me again - which party does this guy work for? Today that is. I already know which one he'll be working for tomorrow...the other one.
Now, don't let up. Keep the pressure on or they'll cave! N/T

"Unpatriotic"
Did anyone catch Pelosi calling House Republicans "unpatriotic" for their role in the hold-up this bill? Really? Are we really going to start using their old bludgeon, and especially on something Democratic leadership shouldn't even be passing in the first place? Has this world been turned completely on its head? Hell, even old Denny Hastert wouldn't have said such a thing during sensitive negotiations like this. I'm glad she said it, it helped sabotage the passage, but if she were actually trying to get something necessary passed, we'd have been in trouble.
You know, barring the financial industry even recovering to its state directly before the crash before electionday (and that's simply not possible), Obama is going to win this thing. This crash is a gift to him, no matter how many times he drops it or tries to return it. But, damn, we're going to have one of the most ineffective governments we've seen in a long time. Unlike the Bush administration, I don't even think they are capable of getting corruption right. lol
There simply isn't any real leadership at the top of this party. It's certainly not coming from Obama, who's denounces the Democratic Party every turn he gets. He's running some kind of parallel party that just so happens co-opt the Democratic Party 'leadership.' It's not going to come from Harry or Nancy, that much is apparent. In the absence of any real leadership, they are simply going to get pushed and pulled by those authoritarian forces in the Republican Party.
Rarely have I seen a majority see itself a minority party and govern as such. They could have 60 seats in the Senate and still govern as if they didn't know how a majority governs.
But, we've always been at war with Eastasia...
I think the takeaway from the Floyd article is actually
This quote:
This was the plan and these were the people that the Democrats decided to fight for.
IMO, this should be the call to arms for any actual liberal or *cough* progressive Democrat. All the things we've demanded, all the things they promised when we turned out for 2006 - this is who they choose to fight for and protect.
It's the plan the Village wanted
From CNN, another plea to "do it now."
This isn't just a Wall Street bailout!
As if anyone had suggested Congress "do nothing." Granted it has been a do-nothing Congress, but that's another matter.
What the average American wants (those of us who are non-villagers) is a bill that addresses the problems of Main Street and not just those of Wall Street. Handing over $700 Billion for a bit of Hanky Panky isn't going to help the millions in jeopardy of losing their homes.
