Armistice Day
I still call it Armistice Day, the end of the war, the recognition of the futility of fighting, the exhaustion over the losses, military and civilian. Veterans Day narrows it into military only, and under the guise of remembrance celebrates the "dulce et decorum est". We already have Memorial Day, also excluded exclusively to honoring soldiers. We need remembrance not just of noble sacrifice but of the suffering caused by war.
I wish we had finally recognized the futility of fighting...
indeed, modern warfare has devolved into one of two things: either hopeless occupations (see, Afghanistan/Iraq) or nuclear standoffs (see, the U.S. not invading or attacking any country that has nukes).
But it's hard to learn lessons like that when every aspect of society is dependent on endless war.

Armistice Day, yes
Thanks for mentioning that, nihil obstet—now that you've said that, I prefer Armistice Day also.

I guess the problem with Armistice Day is the
impermanence of what it was created to celebrate. 'The Great War' was neither so great nor so terrible that men never fought again. World War I is often forgotten these days, at least here in the United States.
Maybe we should just call today 'Remembrance Day.'
