Voter Registration Fraud? Nah. Indianapolis voter registration at 105%.

{{First post - wish me luck}}

Ah, where were "the authorities" back in January? I think we’d have a different democratic nominee if they’d been vigilant about this voter fraud thingy back then.

http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/10/09/a...

Here's my favorite part:

"And in Lake County, home to the long-depressed steel town of Gary, the bipartisan Elections Board has stopped processing a stack of about 5,000 applications delivered just before the October 6 registration deadline after the first 2,100 turned out to be phony.

"All the signatures looked exactly the same," Ruthann Hoagland, a Republican on the board. "Everything on the card filled out looks exactly the same."

"We have no idea what the motive behind it is," she said. "It's just overwhelming to us." "

I have a couple of theory's on the motivation bouncing around in my head.

On a positive note. How can you go wrong when your voter registration is at 105%. Now that's GOTV.

UPDATE: Ok, ok, so I'm still getting the hang of this. Here's more action in Nevada...
It would be interesting to see if this voter registration fraud causes any real voter problems or is it just a revenue stream for the "crackheads."

http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/story?id=5...

I must say that I take exception to ABC's inclusion of this libelous account from an ACORN employee in the article. Fact: crackheads are not lazy. And, more importantly, who doesn't want money?

"Investigators have alleged that ACORN hired 59 inmates on work release as canvassers. One inmate who had worked as a "team leader" for ACORN told investigators that "some of the canvassers hired by ACORN were 'lazy crackheads' who were not interested in working and just wanted money," according to the search warrant affidavit. This isn't funny, but

I thought using "Jimmy Johns" was a nice touch.

That guy does get around. :)

Remember too,

The night of the IN primary, Gary didn't report for hours after the polls closed. It was close to midnight, I think.

tons of this all over--it's ACORN

and whoever else the Obama campaign/DNC paid to register people.

ACORN/Citizen Service Inc--same company--

"... During the primary season, however, the Obama camp paid another group, Citizen Service Inc., $832,598 for various political services, according to Federal Elections Commission filings. That group and ACORN share the same board of directors.

Let's hope this doesn't die under the coverage of the bailout.

I love this job!

I love this job!

I thought you were going to post on NV

Indictments there, and brought by Democrats.

One way to make sure the story doesn't die, and that is to post, post, post!

bec of this shit, the real election stealing by GOP is

minimized and/or ignored--and no one ever brings it up in the media or in Congress.

yep, that's the real problem

my republican friends and neighbors and colleagues have been gleefully taunting me with this, but they look at me like i'm from pluto if i bring up any republican doings.

Not Coincidentally

It's always the voter frauds alleging the registration by lots of poor people, usually of color, that makes the news. The Republican efforts, which are much more sophisticated and much larger in scale, never get news coverage.

Good job posting elixir!

Thanks. Interesting and upsetting.

What do you think happened?

On first blush, I think ACORN workers get paid by @ registration

, the more registrations the more money. I think I read about this happening in the Obama/Alice Palmer campaign. When Alice Palmer decided to jump back into the state senate race she needed to gather hundreds of signatures in very short time in order to get on the ballot. Typical of Chicago politics, they paid folks to get the signatures. Of course, some were less than genuine.

But the consequences of this fraud might impact the election if just by the mere fact that it wastes vast amounts of time vetting the registrations.

What do you think?

I love this job!

I think I want more info

phony claims a fraudulent voter reg are a Republican staple, and no, I don't believe this just because the same news organizations that hyped Whitewater are hyping this, I want to take a second look.

agent provacteur

there is also the possibility of Republican agent provocateurs w/in voter registration organizations. I want to know more about this.

Obama is going to win and McCain is shopping around for a pretext of setting aside the election.

Phony claims and previous patterns

I'm inclined to distrust GOP claims of "voter fraud", but given Obama's history (e.g. caucuses, intimidation, fraud conventions and delegate stealing even before the convention, etc.) it's almost believable this time. And since both parties accept allowing BS be slung around at will, who's to know what is and isn't real?

I get called a stalker for pointing out that having "no regard for consequence" is a very dangerous strategy. But what do I know? I'm not a Correntian or real world better. Shrug.

Only tyrants rig elections.

Bingo

But don't worry -- after the election the BS will stop. This is only a "temporary measure." Just until 2010. I meant 2012. 2014.

ACORN workers have quotas of 20 new voters per shift---

all over the country they do this shit--and new registrations get thrown out all over--and ACORN got into trouble in 04 too--they should not be paid to do this, given their track record.

ACORN in OH from August-- "... ACORN had a part-time staff of 30 who worked five days a week to find unregistered people. The workers made $8 an hour and were required to sign up 20 voters in each five-hour shift. ..." -- http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2008/08/...

they should not be used.

and using them just gives the GOP ammo to scream "voter fraud" -- while they're the ones who actually commit election fraud over and over.

WA ACORN workers charged in 07--only 9 valid out of 1805--

Voter-registration workers charged with submitting bogus registrations -- http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/3252...

"... ACORN has run into legal troubles in other states, including Colorado and Missouri, in which its workers were accused of turning in falsified registrations. ...

Of the total of 1,805 names submitted by ACORN, nine were confirmed as valid registrations and 34 are still under investigation, the elections department spokeswoman said. "

Pay per reg

Is bad because it will inevitably lead to crap like this. I'm not convinced its a problem that won't be fixed further down the pipeline. I'd say that the vast majority of workers are doing things legit and its a shame that a handful of bad apples can ruin things for a ton of honest, hardworking folks.

Here's the thing about all these "voter reg" efforts done at the last minute: many are just reregistrations (necessary because of moving or inadvertent) and many will be invalid (not filling out correctly, or fraudulent to meet quota*). This is on top of the fact that it is extremely hard to get first time registrants to the polls. This means using higher levels of Dem registrations in polling models can lead to misleading results. Its part of what happened in 2004, much to my chagrin.

Only tyrants rig elections.

How to do voter registration

How to do voter registration in a way that is cheap, effective, and your volunteers won't get in trouble.

it should be automatic--

i think.

all American adults that are eligible should be put on voter rolls as they turn 18. And if they want to vote in primaries, they should only have to register as a party member specifically.

(of course, you'd then have to standardize all 50 state's different rules and laws, which'll never happen)

even back in 98 they were getting caught--
