Over at AmericaBlog John is speculating on when Gonzalez is gonna resign (he sez the smart money is on "sometime this weekend") and asking
So who are they gonna get to replace him? Any former Senators come to mind?
Strom Thurmond.

Is Ed Meese still alive?
Or, at least, undead?

new AG?
I've been betting that the only nominateable, confirmable AG is Orin Hatch---a Bush loyalist who'd keep secrets hidden but too sanctimonious to come up with new dirty tricks in <2 years.
Why not a Democrat?
Clinton had William Cohen for SecDef, so why not, in the spirit of Bipartisanship, put a Democrat in charge of Justice?
Incidentally, the locals don't think hatch will do it.

Draft Hatch, dammit!
Gets the loon out of the Senate for chrissakes! Yes he'd just be replaced with another loon (Gov of UT is R I assume?) but that R would have <0 seniority and be a naked new-hatched chick for the forseeable future.
Until the long-overdue lightning bolt smites Jolie Berman, preferably in the middle of one of his more sanctimonious Bush-sucking orations, we can't afford to lose any Democrats from that body. I wouldn't even volunteer any out of the House, bar the supremely unlikely nomination of my Rep. John Tanner (DINO
-TN).
(Okay on second thought you can't even have him; he's whatever the opposite of a firebrand is but he has a D-lock on this rather wobbly purple district for the forseeable future. And my preference for his replacement is still in his first term in the state lege.)
My guess is that Bush won't even try to replace Abu Al G. He'll slap the No. 2 guy in as interim and ride out the last 18 months. They can't afford to have anything but a True Believer in as head of Justice, and I don't think there are that many TB's left unindicted at the moment that they could plug into this slot.
In fact the only one I can think of is Harriet Miers.
Chew on that for awhile, and stock up on popcorn. :)
