Wait, you're just figuring this out now?

Finally, some are beginning to see the FAIL in front of their eyes. But I must say, what the hell took you so long? First, the Obama "reform" fiasco should have been obvious since last year when he did everything from repeatedly calling his plan "universal health care" when it obviously wasn't to demonizing universal mandates, including running Harry & Louise ads. But if that wasn't enough (and it should have been!) Obama also kneecapped single-payer from the beginning of his "reform" efforts as president. Why else would he do that unless health care wasn't what he was fighting for?

A quick review of what has survived an unbecoming process of deal making exposes the dismaying reality. For starters: no public plan; no wealth tax to help pay for cost incurred; no right for the government to bargain with Pharma on drug prices; no meaningful enforcement mechanisms to ensure that vested, for profit interests comply with whatever undertakings, explicit or tacit, that they have made. What do we gain? Not much. A commitment that everyone must be insured, yet with a much weakened employer mandate to accomplish it. An elimination of the most egregious practices of insurance companies re. e.g. pre-existing conditions, arbitrary termination of coverage. Some small subsidies for the working poor. These last are minimal. Someone earning $20,000 a year will get no subsidy unless insurance premiums reach $2,400 -- according to the Finance Committee bill. Good luck all you folks who work for $10 an hour -- you'll need it.

And then there's Obama himself:

It is Barack Obama who is to blame for this. For months, he stayed aloof from the out-of-control Congressional maneuvering based on a strange belief in some kind of bipartisan collective will emerging by osmosis. He never leaned the weight of his person and his office to elements of reform that has been touting as candidate and then President. He deceived the country by pursuing secret talks with the very lobbies who are the heart of disgraceful national health care situation. He entered into deals that were weighted heavily in their selfish interest rather than the national interest. In short, we have gotten from him the antithesis of what we were promised and expected -- in the substance and process of policy both. We have instead a conventionally minded politician overly respectful of the status quo and deferential to those who control and profit from it, A man with no apparent fixed convictions.

Sometimes I wonder what more Obama could have done as an author, Senator, and presidential candidate to convince people of who he was. No one who paid any attention to him should be surprised.

No one could have anticipated!

One even "expected" otherwise!

Seems many didn't want to be confused with "facts" or "reality"

Honestly, Obama did just about everything he could to tell people, "Listen, I'm going to fuck you the hell up as soon as I get the chance! Promise!" Jesus Christ! Did no one see his voting record as a Senator, where he never led on any issue and cowered to the status quo? Or read his incredibly dismissive post on DailyKos during the Roberts nomination, where he not only failed in assessing Roberts' judicial temperament but also referred to our fights against Bush's vast criminality as a petty "food fight?" From that post on, you knew Obama's pattern: appease the hard right, kick the left in the teeth.

Did they not read his actual policies (on his glowing website!) where he was distinctly to the right of both Clinton and Edwards on domestic issues, and also routinely lied about not only his policies (e.g., UHC lie), but also his opponents' (e.g., Harry & Louise, Edwards and 527s)? Or check out his scary list of economic advisors that screamed, "Chicago School of Economics?" Or see the primary debates, especially when Obama dealt with policy questions? Or ask such basic questions, like, "What has he ever gone to the mat for?" or simply, "What has he ever accomplished?"

And then if you were still stuck on stupid or couldn't see his exploitation of misogyny (!), he bludgeoned you over the head with overt ugliness by praising Reagan (fucking Reagan!) and the Republican Party of Newt Gingrinch and Dick Armey ("the party of ideas"), and having homophobic bigots campaign for him! For fuck's sake!

This is why whenever I hear someone says they're "disillusioned" with Obama, I can't help but think of the lie a former presidential candidate used to say whenever he was caught: "This is not the Obama I knew."

On the mark Davidson

I kept saying that the Roberts nomination was the Rosetta Stone to understanding Obama. His "informed" voter, non-Bubba, creative class, deeply intelligent able to grasp Obama's 'superior' ideas, worshippers didn't get it.

Politicians ALWAYS tell us who they are. Nobody actually listens.

He even told them that he was a blank slate on which they painted their fantasies, essentially calling them suckers.

Yup

Harry & Louise!

For the life of me I can't figure out how insignificant the Harry and Louise ads were and are to the current discussion. The ignorance of history on the left is mind-boggling. But hey, many of these people think that Obama's campaign was really something new and not very similar in content/rhetoric to Bush's.

Expected or not

Whether we expect the Obama flop or not makes very little difference for today's health care changes (it's about time to drop reform or insurance reform). What is demonstrated time and again is Obama's ineptitude as a politician. Who in her right mind compromises even before the negotiations start, stimulus and health care? Who would cut a deal with the most parasitic party, pharma, that let's them off the hook to tune of many billions of $$$?

Thus, besides lacking principles, not being a liberal and going back on major campaign promises, Obama is inept as a politician.

KoshemBos

Again

It's only ineptitude if he wants a different result.

It's the kind of ineptitude that pays very well.

Or so I've been told.

JFK has been shot, we miss him a lot
He always knew what to do

Its not a bug its a feature

You're increasingly foolish if you believe its ineptitude and not deliberate. For fuck's sake, this is a man who allowed Harry and Louise ads be run in his name against his opponent! Louise and fucking Harry! What was the whole point of the Harry and Louise ads the first time around?

The same goes for Dems as a whole. I no longer see the "Blue Dogs" as a bug, but a feature of Obama's Democratic Party. Until that realization happens, we won't change anything. "Blue Dogs" are, IMO, being used by "progressive" Dems to go along with Obama's health insurance industry handout, errr, reform.

Brenner's article

is quite damning and devastating. However, he addresses all points Obama and I have no disagreement about any of it.

Now what do we, Democrats, do about it?

Edit: In re health care, I am seriously thinking about joining the teabaggers and just supporting shut it down. My contribution to Obama's bipartisan change.
