Want An Abortion in South Carolina? Get An Ultrasound

The South Carolina legislature sure are busy bees. Fresh off the proposal to give prisoners six months off their sentences if they become human organ farms and donate kidneys, they now have come up with a new doozy of a proposal. If you want an abortion in the Palmetto state, there is a new catch.

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Women seeking abortions in South Carolina would be required to view an ultrasound image of their fetus before the procedure under a proposal gaining support from lawmakers. If enacted, it would be the first law of its kind in the nation.

The bill’s chief sponsor, Rep. Greg Delleney, considers the bill a natural addition to the state’s informed-consent law, which requires that women be told about fetal development and offered alternatives to abortion. The law requires a woman to have at least an hour to think about the information before ending her pregnancy.

Delleney’s proposal would require patients to certify in writing that they viewed the ultrasound.

Democratic state Rep. Gilda Cobb-Hunter plans to lead the fight against the legislation when it comes up for debate later this month in the GOP-dominated House. But she said she expects the legislation to pass because even lawmakers who don’t like the bill will be afraid to vote against it.

Ok, it’s not enough that you insult women into waiting an hour just in case they went to the women’s clinic just on a lark, and decided to have an abortion instead of getting their car detailed.

Sadly, women still have abortions even after being humiliated this way, so there has to be another way to make them feel shittier about making a tough decision that is the right choice for them. There is nothing I can see here about who is going to pay for it. What is the cost going to be to the women? Are poor women going to be able to afford the ultrasound? Is the state going to pick up the tab, especially if the woman decides to go through the song and dance and still proceed?

My sarcastic side wants to say this is a great thing. Now women who are raped can take a good look and see whose eyes and nose were captured by the product of this beautiful love.

I also will love to hear the women who have been told for medical reasons to have an abortion that they will get counseling AND home movies of the fetus that they would have wanted to keep if they were able to do so.

This is great! I think they need to go further. Women who want to have an Tabortion have to go on Abortion Idol, the hot new TV show sweeping South Carolina. Three bitter fundamentalists can critique your personal private reasons for having the abortion while shaming you in front of the community. They can even quote scripture. On special weeks, there will be a guest panel of James Dobson, Pat Robertson, and Jerry Falwell. You are going to hell dawg.

Shit. I shouldn’t have said that. They will get ideas.

Time to pack up the used tampons again

Who was the whackaloon in Virginia a couple of years back who had some antiwoman/forced pregnancy law which would essentially make every female prove that she hadn’t taken an abortifacient for every menstrual cycle? I clearly forget the details but it was an anti-Plan B measure as I recall, would have criminalized the procedure, the prescribing doctor, the breeder woman in question, and probably the closest lamppost as well just to be on the safe side.

Plans swept the intarwebs to ship every Kotex, tampon, maxi and mini and Ultra, and possibly random rags with blood-like substances daubed on them, to the offices of the legislator in question. The measure was, thankfully, also ridiculed in the local press and clarifications began to fly within days, after which the measure died a quiet and obscure death.

Sounds like Rep. Delaney needs a similar program of We-Don’t-Care Packages. He seems to be remarkably ignorant of certain grubby realities of life, bodily fluids and functions, and economic matters as well. Time he was initiated into the Women’s Mysteries.

Care should be taken with fingerprints. Resist the temptation to sprinkle baking soda into the boxes before shipment to cut down on any odors, we don’t want to get anybody excited about white powders or anything. Barring any unexpected hormonal resurgences I am beyond actively participating in the project but will happily cheer on my younger, more menstruous sisters.

Ladies! On your mark, get set….bleed!

South Carolina Abortion Law

First and foremost, I have been in a crisis pregnancy myself. You’re more than welcome to check out my blog.

I was wondering if you researched statistics on abortions?Do you know how many abortions are actually due to rape/incest? Most years it ranges 1% or less.

If people are to make the “right” choice for themselves- why are you opposed to them receiving adequate information? Legally, if I am going to have surgery for anything, I am given a description of the procedure, I am allowed to review my x-rays, blood tests, etc. If abortion is the “right” choice, then abortionists should be pushing for this law as well. This way they can prove that the child growing inside her mother is simply a “cluster of cells” as so many pro-choice websites proclaim. If abortion is a “simple medical procedure” as it is quoted to be on clinic websites- then viewing an ultrasound should be proof of that. I mean no disrespect to your beliefs. Just find it odd that the prolife side always seems forthcoming with truth and the prochoice side always wants to be secretive. Given any thought to that?

K, i don't know why you assume

women who have abortions don’t know exactly what they are doing. and it’s offensive to think that such a personal choice should be dictated by people who have no connection to the woman or family. women should have the right to choose whatever type of counseling, medical or otherwise, they want. forcing women to look at anti-choice propaganda is draconian, and unnecessary.

you were pregnant. good for you. some women don’t want to be. try to understand that, and you’re half way there.

Actually, K, may I offer you a look

…. at my two beautiful children, one really nasty miscarriage and one abortion, all of them mine, all of them viewed up close and personal.

I suspect your information would be more complete if you looked at the lives of the larger part of those who choose abortions. You might offer, in case you wanted very badly for them all to have all of the children they conceive, to adopt each and every one of them. That way, your home could be devoted to eighteen years of supporting each of them. Every physical and emotional problem, a lot of which will be found in financially deprived homes, could demand unremitting care of you and yours.

I would not allow any child of mine to be subjected to that degree of idiocy, of course.

K, perhaps the pro-women side does tend to be "secretive"

Maybe that’s because the forced-pregnancy side shoots the doctors and bombs the clinics and harasses the women, all while loudly proclaiming they’re acting in the name of a loving God.

Ever given any thought to that?

No authoritarians were tortured in the writing of this post.

Actually, K...

Once upon a time, abortion was illegal. It was illegal because people thought it was “sinful” and “murder”. Then came the case of Roe V. Wade, and the Supreme Court of the United States said that women should be able to make the choice. For that trial, that moment in time, the pro-life and the pro-choice went toe to toe. And when the smoke cleared, it was the pro-choice that won the case.

I’m sorry, but to me, the laws that they are passing now just seem like they are trying to make abortion as hard and expensive and painful as possible since they couldn’t keep it illegal.

I know and understand why there are people who don’t believe in abortion. I understand that you can look at a pregnancy scientifically or spirtually or both. What I cannot understand are those who think that the only women who get abortions are those who are just thinking of them “as a cluster of cells” and they need more time, and now pictures of their unborn child, to connect with the spiritual side of themselves that wouldn’t possibly let them commit such a horrible act.

I’m here to say there are spirtual people who have abortions. I am one one of them. I believe in God. I go to church. I still know enough about myself to say, “I’m not ready.” And really, it’s no one’s business but mine about how I got pregnant. If I was raped or not. If I use contraceptives. Why I chose not to give my baby up for adoption. And it’s not anyone place to try and convert me to their way of thinking. I understand you think it’s murder. I don’t. I understand there are other alternatives. This is what’s right for me. You don’t understand? That’s okay. You don’t have to. It’s my body, my baby, my soul, my life, and my choice.

Just because you wouldn’t make the choice to have an abortion, doesn’t give you the right take that choice away from other women. It doesn’t give you the right to make an already difficult decision impossible. If you want an ultrasound, by all means, you should be able to have one. I did. But I can see why it would be hard for some women. Those women should not be forced because legislators don’t think she has given this enough thought. I can assure you that it is all she has thought about since she found out she was pregnant.

Please give you fellow women some credit that they don’t just wake up and decide one day to abort their pregnacy. But that when they make the choice and go in for the proceedure, they have done the reasearch, talked to friends, and made the choice that was best for them. It’s not about secrecy or withholding the truth. It’s about privacy and respect, which those women deserve even if you don’t agree with their choices.

Don't say "pro-life"

Say “forced pregancy advocate.”

Or perhaps “forced pregancy loon,” since what these people have shown is that being pro-life is not at all what they are about.

No authoritarians were tortured in the writing of this post.

no shit. "pro life" would also mean

anti war.
anti death penalty.
proactively adopting unwanted (including brown and disabled or sick) babies.
pro social safety net which guarantees all children have food, good schooling, full health care, and social services.
feminist (hey, life begins inside us, right?)

i can keep going. the forced pregnancy side is none of those things.
