War profiteering next on deck for Leahy?

lambert's picture

I think it would be splendid, splendid to see Bush claiming executive privilege for war profiteers. After all, $8 billion isn't chump change. And one of the fired prosecutors, Carol Lam, was investigating "Duke" Cunningham, of Hookergate ill-fame, is arguably a war profiteer--that is, if you consider bribes and favors from contractors a sign of war profiteering, instead business as usual for Republicans. So, let's call Carol Lam to testify--in the context of war profiteering hearings, not for the DA firings. AP:

Meanwhile, everything's OK in our post-1/7 world:

Defense Department investigators said Tuesday they are going to be more aggressive suspending or barring companies from doing U.S. contract work in Iraq if they are involved in war profiteering there.

A little late, wouldn't you say? And where's the $8 billion dollars?

Iraqi officials are also investigating as many as 2,000 cases of fraud, amounting to about $8 billion in unaccounted for Iraqi construction funds, he said.

Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy said more controls are needed over how billions of dollars for Iraq reconstruction is spent and that the Justice Department needs to move more aggressively in prosecuting fraud in Iraq.

My goodness, I wonder why they didn't? I mean, it simply isn't concievable that the "loyal Bushies"--oh, I'm sorry, "honorable public servants"*--are protecting humongous Republican contributors like Dubai-bound Halliburton.

I guess I'm picturing a rolling series of subpoenas--like gunfire from the great guns Captain Aubrey's Surprise. Fire, fire two, fire three, one subpoena and one scandale a week, each one linked to the next. Let Bush keep yammering about executive privilege, because it's going to be clear enough what he's trying to conceal.

* Again, to the authoritarians busily destroying our constitutional government, there's no contradiction here. To be "loyal" is to be honorable: There is no higher calling than doing the will of The Decider. It's called fuhrerprinzip (though it often finds expression in acts of fuhrergefluffen). Contrast, well, Bushido...

Bob Hope deserves a library, dammit! you just can't expect busy congressionals to find the time to read all those messy documents or blog posts detailing republican crime from the last six years. that's not Serious Congressionalizing.

get with the program, lambert.

War Profiteers

I've been calling Duke Cunningham a war profiteer for awhile now and wondering why nobody seems to have remembered Arthur Miller's "All My Sons."

Now it's good to see others see that same vision and begin to bruit it about.

The war profiteering trail is the one to follow. That's the one that wraps up Cheney and the Bush family into one nice little package along with all the other ghouls of the Carlyle Group, the Cerberus Group, and Halliburton, including all their good buddies in Dubai and Saudi Arabia and other places like that.

Go for it Sen Leahy.

Beyond war, inflation, the end of the technology/productivity wave, and financial collapse, we think the most potent and short-term threat would be societies demanding a more ‘equitable’ share of wealth.
