Watch out for Huckabee in Iowa

[Welcome, Online WSJ readers.]

Yepsen in the Des Moines Register:

On the Republican side, Huckabee shot up 16 percentage points from 8 percent in a July poll, while Romney moved up only 2 points from 26 percent - virtually unchanged. Also, Huckabee’s got 44 percent of the evangelicals, leading Romney 2-1 in a group that comprises 40 percent of the GOP caucus attendees. He also leads Romney among those with the strongest anti-abortion views and those who have attended previous caucuses.

So, Huckabee has the Republican lunatic fringe base locked up. And the rest of the field is throwing in the towel:

It may get even better for Huckabee. Some of the other Republican candidates look to be clearing out of Iowa to give him a cleaner shot at Romney. Rudy Giuliani, Fred Thompson and John McCain have been making only limited efforts in the state. Giuliani and McCain appear to be opting for more emphasis in New Hampshire. Letting Huckabee beat Romney in Iowa would give them a better chance of victory in New Hampshire. Nobody can figure out what Thompson is doing.

Somebody should really ask Huckabee, an ordained Southern Bapist minister, whether he’s for, or against clergy sexual predation and, if he’s against it, what he plans to do about it. Here’s a list of Southern Bapist ministers arrested or convicted. Here’s the tracking site.

The Encourager will Lead

Huckabee the Encourager, is the ONLY candidate able to pull the States back to “United!” His growing number of supporters see a rock-solid candidate standing up with confidence and conviction against the slow deterioration of values. Huckabee and his supporters see a future that won’t be wasted with regretful hindsight. We need to take our beloved country to where Life, Marriage, Families and Liberty Prevail!

Anyone know who the Rev. Jay Cole is?

I was poking round here, and found a reference to him.

But seriously, P Jacobs, this is parody, right? I mean, in my book, Huckabee’s Wayne Dumond parole* flushes any quuestion of Huckabee’s values right down the toilet. Murray Waas in the Arkansas Times looks at the record:

New sources, including an advisor to Gov. Mike Huckabee, have told the Arkansas Times that Huckabee and a senior member of his staff exerted behind-the-scenes influence to bring about the parole of rapist Wayne Dumond, who Missouri authorities say raped and killed a woman there shortly after his parole.

Gene Lyons:

Huckabee came into office talking about pardoning DuMond, citing “serious questions as to the legitimacy of his guilt.” He did that without consulting the prosecutor, who described the case as one of the strongest he’d ever tried. If nothing else, what were the odds that the victim would have identified, purely by chance, a perp with an extensive rap sheet? DuMond’s criminal history included arrests for murder and assault as well as other allegations of rape. He’d beaten the murder rap by testifying against two accomplices he’d helped beat a soldier to death with a claw hammer. The rape cases never came to trial. Young Ashley Stevens’ courageous eyewitness testimony, however, sent him to the penitentiary. After Stevens went public in 1997, Huckabee relented somewhat. Instead of pardoning DuMond, he held an improper closed-door meeting with the state’s parole board, which subsequently reversed itself, paroling DuMond to Missouri. Huckabee claimed the board brought up DuMond; some board members insisted that he did. Huckabee wrote a “Dear Wayne” letter, stating, “My desire is that you be released from prison. I feel that parole is the best way for your reintroduction into society to take place.”

In June 2001, DuMond was charged with the murder of a Kansas City area woman, exactly as some of us predicted. Police found his DNA under the victim’s fingernails. Stevens said that when she heard the news on her car radio, she had to pull off the highway until she’d cried herself out. Convicted of first-degree murder, Du-Mond died in prison in 2005. No sooner was his Missouri arrest announced than Huckabee began blaming everybody in Arkansas except himself.

Lovely.

Digby has been all over this.

Naturally, our famously free Villagers will be all over this story. Not.

UPDATE * Originally, I wrote “pardon,” not “parole.” It’s Bush who pardons the criminals on his staff, not Huckabee. Not to imply that Dumond was on Huckabee’s staff.

We. Are. Going. To. Die. We must restore hope in the world. We must bring forth a new way of living that can sustain the world. Or else it is not just us who will die but everyone. What have we got to lose? Go forth and Fight!—Xan

The real Mike Huckabee.....

Dear Wayne Dumond,

My desire is that you be released from prison.

I feel that parole is the best way for your reintroduction into society to take place”.

The Beginning of the letter Mike Huckabee wrote to convicted rapist Wayne Dumond, before he sexually assaulted and killed a 39 year old woman in Kansas City.

It’s Not only about Wayne.
It’s about OVER 1,000 Pardon’s.

12 OF THOSE MURDERERS.
