Welcome, United States Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor!!!

The 68-31 vote confirming the new Justice fell along party lines, according to the New York Times. Justice Sotomayor's confirmation was cause for rejoicing today.

Despite the Times' clear bias -- they give quotes from Mitch McConnell high in the story and describe absent Sen. Edward Kennedy as "ailing" and "did not vote," the announcement that the opening in our nation's foremost judiciary panel has been filled produced positive reactions.

“Judge Sotomayor’s career and judicial record demonstrates that she has always followed the rule of law,” Senator Patrick J. Leahy, Democrat of Vermont and chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said Thursday. “Attempts at distorting that record by suggesting that her ethnicity or heritage will be the driving force in her decisions as a justice of the Supreme Court are demeaning to women and all communities of color.”

The tradition begun with Anita Hill appears to be continuing. A woman is inferior to a man, regardless of ethnicity or qualifications; it is an outrage to the sensibilities of such Senators as Orrin Hatch that a President would consider nominating a woman to be a United States Supreme Court justice, when just a few years ago the Senate refused to allow a Hispanic man to be elevated to a seat on the court.
Of course the GOP paints Justice Sotomayor as activist and liberal -- she follows the law, including the Constitution, which they regard as quaint at best and inconvenient at worst, and for which they hold no respect, since clearly its stipulations regarding egalitarianism don't apply to the brown, red, yellow, black, female, non-straight, or most importantly the unmonied.

Mixed feelings

Glad to have a Latina, both in terms of gender and ethnicity and she's certainly better than Alito and Roberts combined. OTOH, part of me suspects that the GOP racist, sexist bullshit was to hide the fact that she's probably not going to be any more liberal than the man she replaces, David Souter, and he was appointed by a Republican.

Because that's how far to the right our country has slid in the past 20 years.

Did anyone bother to get her on the record about abortion?

All the stories I read mentioned that her record didn't include many hot button abortion cases, and that Obama never even asked(remember that, fauxgressives, the next time you come to browbeat me with ROE!11!). They all also pointed out how Catholic she is(never minding that Catholics are what 22% percent of the population, but 66% of justices on the SC).

I suppose Obama will hail this as a "bipartisanship success", and talk about how wonderful it is that we were able to put aside that decisive issue, but deep down, I have a feeling the fetus fetishists are crowing that they have finally eliminated the Supreme Court's abortion "litmus test" by Democrats.

Unqualified congratulations to Sotomayor!

Right here. I'm sure I won't agree with everything she does, but so what? On balance I'm extremely happen to have a woman of her background and temperament on the court and very pleased by Obama's choice here.

Thanks Sarah!

Sorry, I don't fall in love with politicians. I'm not that desperate.....

Good reading! Favorite quote: What could go wrong?
Beyond war, inflation, the end of the technology/productivity wave, and financial collapse, we think the most potent and short-term threat would be societies demanding a more ‘equitable’ share of wealth.
