Write in is a wonderful thing....

Whaaaa???

Hillary Clinton isn't a Democrat any longer?

In Texas, where does this vote end up going? Did you do the research?

But, we've always been at war with Eastasia...

Sarah's picture

I'm assuming it goes to the registrar's office, DamonMI

since, officially, the write in option is on the ballot.

the voting is done by a machine.

Lubbock County had 7,700 early voters yesterday. That was an all-time high.

(where else would it go, and what research are you talking about?)

Hey, Sarah

make that graphic into a poster and I'll buy one.

What I was asking was not where the vote physically ends up, but who it is tallied for? Does anyone else know what I'm talking about?

As Jon Stewart says, "Go on..."

Sarah, talk to us.

What led to this change of heart?

Truth Partisan's picture

Time to

get out the "don't blame me, I voted for Hillary" tee-shirt, buttons, etc. Wow!

Good Heavens!

Expound?

amberglow's picture

how did you write-in on a machine?

is there an option to write in a name?

vastleft's picture

I don't know about you, but

I'm bringing a crayon, just in case. Or maybe a Sharpie.

amberglow's picture

our old lever machines here

have never allowed write-ins--you'd have to go to the desk and fill out a complete paper one, i believe. You couldn't split up your votes to be using both.

and all the newer scan ones, etc, don't seem to have options like that either--do they?

amberglow's picture

so what happens with early votes?

they get certified right away or sit in a room untouched til Nov. 4th?

(i don't trust that they won't be played with)

elixir's picture

Way to go, Sarah! I'll be writing in HRC here in MA.

Here in MA, if a candidate doesn't register to be a write in then the vote goes into the great void. Unfortunately, HRC didn't register as a write in. I guess I'm OK with that. As long as it isn't counted as a dem vote for the dem candidate which I confirmed w/ the Dept. of Elections.

I love this job!

The tabulation takes place after early voting closes.

Monday was the first day of early voting.
It'll run 14 days.
The votes are recorded by the machine and the records go to the county elections administrator's office.
I'm annoyed because, up until 2006, if you voted early in Texas, you got a paper ballet and a pencil to mark it with.
Now it's all done by machine.

Far as a change of heart, what? I thought I had three choices (no sample ballots in the paper yet): McCain, Obama or the Libertarians. Being me and knowing that the Libertarians are the Norquist-fraction GOP on steroid-rage overdrive (also their local people are on the far side of completely bananacakes insane), I had determined months ago that the only thing to do was vote against McCain. That meant straight-party ticket. Punch one button, done, and you don't even have to hold your nose 'cause you don't get down to block to mark "for" Obama.

So I go down to the grocery store with my driver's license ('cause I always have my license when I'm driving, you know?) and there's a line, and damned if it isn't for early voting (which I wasn't expecting) -- but that was Monday night, and after 7 p.m. so I was too late.

So Tuesday I went to the store again ('cause where I live you buy hamburger or chicken no more than 24 hours before you use it or it goes bad) and stood in line to vote first -- when I saw I had the option to write in, and since I live in the scarlet throbbing pericardial temple of Bushdom ...

are they GOP or Dem?

and are they crooked or no?

I can't believe they're gonna just sit around for 2 weeks.

Sarah's picture

Who, Amberglow?

but it's a felony to tamper with votes in Texas, just like tampering with the mail.

your county election officials

who will be sitting on all these early votes.

Sarah's picture

They're GOP. I live in West Texas.

So?

Do what you can where you are with what you've got.

Otherwise, you're part of the problem.

so, do you trust them

not to alter the vote totals? do you trust them not to act like they did in OH in 04? etc?

Sarah's picture

absent evidence they will/have done so,

not even I am paranoid enough to use that as an excuse not to vote.

We gotsta know.

Please let us in on your decision-making process!

C'mon, VL. I went to the county convention for

Hillary, remember?

When I saw the option to write-in on the ballot, it was a no-brainer.

IIRC back to, say, last week

You were pretty critical of Obama abstainers. Not complaining, just very curious.

Sarah's picture

VL -- up to this morning, I'm still critical of

a lot of what I perceive as misbehavior.

Skepticism I don't have a problem with. Smears, inaccuracies, laziness -- if you get annoyed that somebody treats your candidate that way, why wouldn't you hold yourself to the same standard on behalf of the party's candidate?

Look, all the sample ballots I could find online - the AJ hasn't printed one yet, they'll do it the Sunday before Election Day like always -- did NOT show the option to vote for anybody except the "big three" (McPalin, Obama/Biden, Barr).

When I found that I really did have a chance to vote my conscience, I was absolutely delighted.

Do I honestly think it'll matter? Dude. I live in Lubbock, Texas. This place is so red it makes Arizona look deep-water-navy blue. But ever since 1980, I have voted how I wanted, even knowing my vote would probably do squat to affect the national races. (As usual I voted mostly Dem yesterday, but I also voted for one Republican whose opponent, not a Dem, is a thoroughgoing disaster looking for a place to happen. He's not apt to win, but if I can help make sure of that, so much the better.)

Really thought I'd posted this, but...Sarah, did you create the

Hillary graphic? It's terrific.

Damon's picture

I'm Still Not Sure You Understood...

...my question, so I went and looked it up. Seems that a candidate seeking to be written in has to file a Declaration of Write-in Candidacy by August 26. What the sec. of state's office in Texas doesn't say is how many electors are needed so that the vote counts for something.

But, we've always been at war with Eastasia...

Sarah's picture

no, jawbone ... found it on the internets! DamonMI,

from "In Texas, where does this vote end up going? Did you do the research?", I didn't at all grok what you wanted.

Good reading! Favorite quote: What could go wrong?
Beyond war, inflation, the end of the technology/productivity wave, and financial collapse, we think the most potent and short-term threat would be societies demanding a more ‘equitable’ share of wealth.
