We're doomed

Olivia Newton-John's "Physical" sexiest song ever.

A society that truly believes this is in the last throes of utter decadence...

This is from the generation raised on MTV, lambert

This support is probably based on the music video, which featured many shots of Ms. Newton-John's thong bisected derriere, as well as the greased up buff bods of her workout "students", more than it is based on the sexiness of the song.

If it'd been me doing the choosing, here's what I would have chosen.

doomed is correct, lambert

How in the name of all that is called music did the great unwashed choose that piece of bubble-gum crap? HERE's what I call sexy:

Oh yeah, love Kiss from a Rose

Great song, and Seal has a great voice.

Too bad it had to gain popularity from a horrible movie. Which also had another awesome song.

Always have to separate the song from its environs!

Many great ones live in oases of waste..alot of the best ones exist in albums, movies, operas that are so-so at best

My husband thinks they've never had sex.

Could be.

Oh please....stop hating on Olivia.

First off, "Physical" was released in late 1981....well BEFORE MTV was even launched.

Second...the video for that song was one of the pioneers in production of music videos before Michael Jackson's "Thriller" reset the standard.

Third....have y'all actually SEEN the video?? Olivia in leotards and headband domming those poor fools in the fitness club was simply fabulous...and the shower scene during the guitar solo breakdown was absolutely HOT.

Maybe not her outright sexiest song ("Soulkiss" from a few years later would be my choice), but not the Apocolypse you all assume.

Nothing against all those other songs, either...but for her time and era, Olivia simply RULED. Anthony

Incorrect, actually

MTV was launched in August of 1981, so the video was released after the launch.

And you pretty much made my point for me, which is that this song's selection for "sexiest" was pretty much because of the video.

I don't think anyone's hating on Olivia, they are hating upon the crowd that picked this song. It may be the sexiest video. But that isn't what is was selected as, it was for sexiest song. And if I had to think of a song to have sex to, RIGHT NOW, "Physical" wouldn't be it.

You even point out yourself that this artist has sexier songs.

Maybe Peggy Lee's Fever

Or Leonard Cohen's Suzanne, or Talking Head's Take Me To The River (yes, I think it's sexier than Al Green's version), or Marvin Gaye's Sexual Healing, or Joni Mitchell's Cold Blue Steel...

I don't mind Olivia Newton John but that song is pretty thoroughly stripped of anything more sexual than a Hallmark Card Valentine. It's genuinely innocuous.

Several Olivia songs sexier than "Physical"

Like "Magic":

Or "Deeper than the Night" and "A Little More Love" ("A Little More Love" begins at about 3:20):

Also, there is this caveat...

This was NOT a popular opinion poll by Billboard, but was based upon the song's ultimate standing and success on Billboard's weekly Top 100 ranking for sales.

Since "Physical" had stayed at #1 for a record tying 10 straight weeks between November 1981 and late January 1982, it got more weight than other songs that had less success.

You are entitled to your opinion, of course...but mine is that she simply ROCKED. Call me old school, if you well. Anthony

My vote(s) would be for INXS

"Need you Tonight", Bryan Ferry's "Slave to Love", or maybe T-Rex's "Get It On (bang a gong)". (Or even, ignoring the sexism, The Rolling Stones "Honky Tonk Women") Ratings based on how much a "sexy" song compels me to get up and dance.
Too bad it wasn't an opinion poll...

For pure sex,

Genesis' "Mama" is one of my all time faves...or, for romantic sex, pretty much anything off of Julie London's "Make Love to Me" album.

"Mama:"

Julie London, "Go Slow:"

Never vote for people who hate you.

Good reading! Favorite quote: What could go wrong?
Beyond war, inflation, the end of the technology/productivity wave, and financial collapse, we think the most potent and short-term threat would be societies demanding a more ‘equitable’ share of wealth.

POTL, n. People Of The Lie. Coined by Christian psychiatrist and theologian M. Scott Peck in his book The People of the Lie, which is, among other things, an examination of the nature of human evil. Peck quotes Martin Buber:

Since the primary motive of evil is disguise, one of the places evil people are most likely to be found is within the church.

Additional excerpts can be found here. "Utterly dedicated to preserving their self-image of perfection, they are unceasingly engaged in the effort to maintain the appearance of moral purity. They are acutely sensitive to social norms and what others might think of them. They seem to live lives that are above reproach. The words "image", "appearance" and "outwardly" are crucial to understanding the morality of 'the evil'. While they lack any motivation to be good, they intensely desire to appear good. Their goodness is all on a level of pretense. It is in effect a lie. Actually the lie is designed not so much to deceive others as to deceive themselves. We lie only when we are attempting to cover up something we know to be illicit. At one and the same time 'the evil' are aware of their evil and desperately trying to avoid the awareness." Peck's material, I feel, has great potential for analyzing and deconstructing the nature and behavior of the wing of the Republican party that has captured our government. With the caveats, that Peck raises, that evil is very dangerous to analyze--since we are, after all, all vulnerable to it.
