When "first to know" means "last to know"

lambert's picture

Over at Cheetopia, they're still on the houses, but the frontpagers* did take time out to start generating the requisite amount of enthusiasm for Joe Biden. And cue the doublethink:

Attention readers: when the cable news networks broke the story on Obama's VP pick, several newscasters stated it somehow means Obama broke his word to text us with the news. That's right folks, they criticized him for their own reporting. I'm dumbfounded. That is all.

Nice try. Very nice. Except the writer, Devilstower, omits a crucial fact. Obama didn't "promise" to "text us with the news." He promised to "text us" first "with the news".

Cue another round of WORM!

first
See? Right there?

... be the first to know...

Now, it is true that the press actually did do some reporting. And, apparently, the dispatch of the Secret Service to staked-out Biden's residence was the tip-off.

So, who could possibly told the Secret Service where to dispatch the team but the Obama campaign? So, first the insiders know, then the Secret Service knows, then the press knows, and then -- at 3 AM, haw -- the "first to know" know (cf. Matthew 20:16).

NOTE Yes, it does make sense to protect Biden first before announcing his selection to the world. I'm sure the Secret Service wanted it that way, and they were right. But that's not the argument that DarkSyde makes, and I'm addressing what he wrote, and not what, in some parallel universe, he might have written. And, needless to say, that's not the promise Obama made (cf. Luke 16:10-11). Of course, the whole thing was just a marketing campaign anyhow, so perhaps nobody was actually deceived.

NOTE * Kos: "Best VP rollout EVAH!. Yeah, right.

cell txt msg for an 8-track VP--

how do you say "it's an old white guy who's been in DC since Nixon" in L33t?

didn't Biden run the Anita Hill hearings?

Also, i laughed when i read this. The snark and attacks write themselves:

Biden is mr. credit card, or was it specifically the Senator from MBNA?

Former College plagerist==guess he and Barry have lots in common there.

Wearer of the Pink Tutu--as Bartcop would say.. talks tough then finds a way to say, okay no problemo. I don't know for sure, but wasn't he a Mr. Bi partisan gang of 14 member?

Oh Wait.. DIdn't he vote for the Authorization to USE FORCE against Iraq?? this is the horrible no good terrible evilest vile thing that HRC ever ever did in her whole life of evilness...

And Joe? oh, not so evil I guess.. much better redeeming qualities like.. uh.. testicular devices.

Sheesh.. Vice President BIDEN.. ?? gag me. dupager

sometimes gimmicks don't work....

...and in this instance, it would not have mattered if the VP had been announced a day or two after the text message gimmick was announced.

But this was one giant clusterfuck... even forgetting for a moment that the minute the Secret Service is dispatched, its a dead giveaway, the campaign had to "roll out" the text messages -- in other words, the media would be reporting on the FIRST text messages received well before most of the messages were sent.

I think the original idea was to send everyone a text message at the same time during the work-day. Unless you are spending your time watching cable news for rumors, your 'text message' would be the first news... and Obots all over America would be telling their co-workers who the VP pick was, and talking up Obama.

But the technology wasn't able to handle the number of messages that had to go out simultaneously -- I don't know anything about text message protocols, but I do know that I just sent a text message from one cell phone to another on the same network, and it took 3 seconds for "message sent" to appear. One suspects that different networks have different response times, and if you are out of your own network's covering range, it takes even longer. So, if you are talking about a million messages, you are talking about a LOT of time waiting for the various 'handshakes' that have to occur...

avocating

Yup... All Obama campaign has to say is that "we began rolling out txt messgages at XXpm, hours before the press announced the VP name, but due to technical problems and the sheer number of txt messages, many did not get sent out before the media announced his name." Of course those getting the early txt's are all staffers, but it is enough to cover to blatant lack of "ponying up" by the Obama campaign.

Not Sure...

I'm not sure I get the whole issue around the text messaging thing. If I blame anyone, it would be for those dumb enough to fall for what was obviously a gimmick.

BTW, the Secret Service shouldn't have been such a huge tip-off. Just days before the MSM has spotted Secret Service "crawling" (there own words) the streets of Providence.

But, we've always been at war with Eastasia...

Um,

the picture in the post says, "You will receive an email the moment Barack makes his decision,[...]" (My emphasis) FAIL

We can't afford not to have single-payer!

Damon's picture

Yes

I understand what it says, I just think the criticism is kind of petty. I could see criticizing him when he first came up with this ridiculous gimmick. I don't know. That he didn't come through on it was a given, to me. The 'promise's' wording sounded ambiguous to me from the getgo, and how could he promise that there wouldn't be a leak?

He failed his supporters the minute he came up with this gimmick, which, BTW, wasn't to announce his vice president as much as it was the fact that the more direct the interaction the candidate gives you the more likely you are to vote for him or her (can't find the study).

But, we've always been at war with Eastasia...
