Where has DCblogger been?
Primary tabs
Wondering where I have been? Why I am not posting nearly as often as I used to?
Well, these days I have been talking to the police and following up on my stolen
laptop. Yes, you heard that right. In a dangerous part of town, I turned my
attention away for a moment, and my laptop was stolen right out from under me.
Alas, I did not have the forethought to insure it. It has been a very humiliating
and demoralizing experience.
The recession has devastated my business, so I have no possibility to replace it.
Unless my readers are in a position to assist me. I know these are precarious
times, and you may not be in a position to assist me. I have used Macs for 25
years, and really don't think that I could adjust to a Windows Machine. Replacing
the Mac and iWork software will run $1300. Any assistance you can offer would be
profoundly appreciated.

Dear DCB
I'm so sorry to hear about both the theft of your computer and the devastating impact of the recession on your business.
Stick with the Mac; I say this as a decades-long, thoroughly disgruntled PC-microsoft user. Every time I need a new computer and contemplate the possibility of shifting to Mac, I chicken out, feeling too old to learn a whole new operating system.
You are an invaluable addition to Corrente.
I tried your link to Paypal, it doesn't seem to be working. We won't be able to help until that's fixed.
LOL ;-)
No possibility to become gruntled again?
DCBlogger Pay Pal Link
Until the one in the post is fixed, the right link can be found at DCB's other website here.
I just sent some cash your way DCB. You've done amazing work on single payer.
I also stickied the post so it doesn't get lost during the day.
I'm in
wish I could do more
Note - You Don't Have to Be a PayPal Member
DCBlogger's donation page is set up so you don't have to join Paypal to donate. I know that's an issue for some.
Is there a way to avoid providing all that information?
Member or not, I'm sure they are harvesting it.
Is there a way to send a check?
(A small one; I'm laid off.)
Do you know about http://betamacs.com/ ? He buys machines from schools and such, and has pretty good turnover and better prices than elsewhere.
Great link, ty
Thanks gmanedit.
laid off?
I could not, in good concsious accept your generous offer of support. These are hard times. Protect yourself.
I'll kick in something a little later on
after I get off of work, DCblogger.
Sorry to hear you're having a rough time.
[Edit: OK. just sent you a little something. I hope it helps!]
Sorry to hear that
that s*cks. I kicked in some ducats, wish it could be more.
you have mail
actually, i've tried out the private messages system. here's hoping it went to you and not to somebody else accidentally [i am mouse-impaired some days].
Complete sympathy for your plight, DCBlogger! Being out here
in the cold with only library land PC access has been a major bummer. I'm waiting for T'giving weekend sales to see if some decent prices are on offer.
It's been quite interesting to note the difference between my first PC replacement (6 or 7 years ago) and now: Then, stores were falling all over themselves to outdo the others in terms of value and price reductions; now, it seems to be a very tight market. Like they're trying to use the downturn to retrain us consumers to buy..,.ulp!...at list or close to it!
I missed a decent deal when the clerk didn't tell me the rebates were expiring the next day--and I haven't seen anything as good since then. But I'm in PC land--Macscape may be much different (never did much discounting, right?).
Best wishes to you. So sorry for your loss...including, I imagine, lots of work output. Drat.
And here comes "Sleepy" putting us off line. Must hit save or all will be lost!
Is 'gruntled' a verb or what?
If I might be so bold as to suggest you laptop totin' folks investigate 'LoJack for Laptops'...I neve go anywhere without it.
Oh, DCBlogger -- I am sorry
one of my coworkers lost a laptop to a thief in Dallas in 2007.
I have been where you are, jawbone. It's not fun.
Now that I'm not there, though, I find I'm a lot less compulsive about blogging.
Not writing or editing, but blogging.
BDBlue, Are We Sure
...about that link? I mean that website and that paypal page say nothing about DCBlogger, although it does indicate single-payer supporter.
I want to make sure my contribution gets to the right person.
Or, if anyone else can assure me that the link in BDBlue's post above is to DCBlogger's webpage; the link there does work, and thank-you for the information, BDBlue. I see that the link in the post is still getting an error message.
I assure you
the link at this post will send kibble to this long suffering blogger. don't anybody stretch themselves, don't go out on a financial limb.
And just to clarify
I got that link from the link to DCBlogger on the Corrente homepage (and it matched an earlier visit I had had to DCBlogger's website). But I'm very glad to see DCB confirm it because you're right leah, if you hadn't visited the page before you wouldn't necessarily recognize it as DCB's (and I should've indicated where I got the link in the first place, so my apologies for not being more clear).
not to say that you shouldn't get the Mac
but have you considered Linux and/or OpenOffice?
There is a cheap semi-solution
maybe, depending on how computerly self-sufficient and hackerish you are. [I've been loaned one of these to experiment on, and so far I'm having fun with it. I do, however, have a mini as well, so I don't know how I'd feel about having this netbook as my only computer.]
Sorry for your loss. I'm down in income myself, and the thought that I'd lose a computer right now scares the living daylights out of me.
self-sufficient and hackerish
users usually don't use Macs.
Um, that's very not true of the Mac users around here (locally)
Most long-term Mac users I know have been hacking ever since ResEdit, but I recognize that they may not be typical of the whole Mac user world. And there would be no "hackintosh" community if not for this strain of Mac users! Not to mention the people who hack their iPhones, etc.
P.S. I hope you didn't take my comment as insulting. It was just a suggestion in case you might find that option intriguing. I've borrowed the one I now have because of my own worries about my dying laptop, which I need because of a slight disability and not just for convenience, and in my current economic situation I will not be able to replace it if it dies. So, you know, I thought I'd bring it up.
no offense taken
actually after I read your comment I began to consider making my own Linux box. That would be the ultimate geek chic.
almost there
another $200 and I am there. If you have steady employment, and are not burdened with debt, I would be profoundly greatful for whatever you can send
