White House: "I guess I don't know what you mean by 'equal justice under the law.'"

lambert's picture

Yes, that's what they said. I swear I'm not making this up! The transcript, featuring the comedic stylings of White House flak Scott Stanzel:

Q Scott, is Scooter Libby getting more than equal justice under the law? Is he getting special treatment?

MR. STANZEL: Well, I guess I don't know what you mean by "equal justice under the law."

Well, there you have it!

But this is a unique case, there's no doubt about that.

No, it isn't. There are plenty of people who have been convicted of perjury, and nobody's ever been pardoned without expressing remorse or doing some time.

Q So that this case shouldn't be setting any kind of standard for, say, someone who has already asked for commutation of sentence for, like, 33 months in jail for perjury and obstruction of justice, just as Scooter Libby was charged with those?

MR. STANZEL: I think every case is different, and it's important to evaluate every case on its merits.

Tell that to the 57 people Gonzales and Bush had executed with the Texas Death Penalty Memos. "Evaluate each case" my Sweet Aunt Fanny.

Maybe we should all call the White House tomorrow and find out if anybody knows what "equal justice under the law means." Heck, we've got the phone numbers, so we might as well put them to good use....

Ummm

Wow...and I thought the Bush administration couldn't show they were any more clueless.

LIBBY SCOOTS FREE!

Scott Stanzel, you are a pompous, arrogant self -aggrandizing moron if you believe game playing with the concept of 'equal treatment under the law' is a ready source of humor. You have absolutely no idea how many people have utter contempt for you as a result of your stupid remark...even some you would dare call 'friend'.

They just keep lowering the bar, okinawa!

They just keep surprising me by sinking to new lows. I say to myself, "That's it. Nothing worse is possible!" and in days, at most weeks... they've defined deviancy down again.

Good reading! Favorite quote: What could go wrong?
Beyond war, inflation, the end of the technology/productivity wave, and financial collapse, we think the most potent and short-term threat would be societies demanding a more ‘equitable’ share of wealth.
