Who Da King?*

Someone is taking the Village pundits seriously. Politico:

Obama plans to declare victory May 20

Not long after the polls close in the May 20 Kentucky and Oregon primaries, Barack Obama plans to declare victory in his bid for the Democratic presidential nomination.

And, until at least May 31 and perhaps longer, Hillary Clinton’s campaign plans to dispute it.

It’s a train wreck waiting to happen, with one candidate claiming to be the nominee while the other vigorously denies it, all predicated on an argument over what exactly constitutes the finish line of the primary race.

The Obama campaign agrees with the Democratic National Committee, which pegs a winning majority at 2,025 pledged delegates and superdelegates—a figure that excludes the penalized Florida and Michigan delegations. The Clinton campaign, on the other hand, insists the winner will need 2,209 to cinch the nomination—a tally that includes Florida and Michigan.

Big Tent Democrat at TalkLeft

So let me get this straight — the first act of the self declared Democratic nominee Barack Obama will be to state that Michigan and Florida will not count?

So here, apparently, is how the Obama Campaign plans to attract Clinton supporters. Just declare victory pre-emptively. At least the Florida and Michigan delegations will get a nice trip to Denver in August because they’ll have no impact on the nomination.

Who needs an election anyway? Just send Obama right to the White House. It’s not like the Republicans were going to campaign seriously against him anyway because Obama is Teh Awesome.

*Refers to a Cheap Trick song of the same title.

So, Donna Brazile was right then?

Good to know.

Fuck You Voters!

You left off Obama’s giant Fuck You to all voters, not just Florida and Michigan. Also, from that Talk Left post the latest memo from the Obama campaign:

[T]he popular vote is a deeply flawed and illegitimate metric for deciding the nominee – since each campaign based their strategy on the acquisition of delegates… . Essentially, the popular vote is not much better as a metric than basing the nominee on which candidate raised more money, has more volunteers, contacted more voters, or is taller.

Silly us for thinking voters decided elections. Have we learned nothing since 2000?

I'm so pissed

I fired off a message to the DNC to call the Obama campaign to tell Axelrod, Plouffe and Obama to knock it the hell off. There’s been a lot of stupidity coming from them since Tuesday, for example (emphasis mine):

“With the Clinton path to the nomination getting even narrower, we expect new and wildly creative scenarios to emerge in the coming days,” Mr. Plouffe writes. “While those scenarios may be entertaining, they are not legitimate and will not be considered legitimate by this campaign or its millions of supporters, volunteers, and donors.”

Would one of those “new and wildly creative scenarios” have to do with the seating of the Florida and Michigan delegates, perhaps?

And David Bonior, Edwards campaign manager, just endorsed Obama, saying Obama’s “commanding lead” and “positive campaign” led him to his decision.

FUUUUUUUUGGGHHH

Where the hell have these people been when they commend him for his “positive campaign”?

I really hope this was a huge misstep that BO will address..

because it’s really not a great idea.

I love this job!

Santayana was right

When he said, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”

Yes, BDB you’re right that Obama has told voters to basically fuck off. Must be how the “new coalition” that Donna Brazile mentioned is going to win friends and influence people.

Commanding lead?

Right, if you totally exclude two critical GE states and actually believe that winning goddamn caucuses in deeply red states somehow should be considered of greater importance than setting up a coalition that will win battleground and big GE states.

May 20th will be Obama’s Mission Accomplished. God, I hope Clinton can take this fight to the convention floor (Donate $$$ to her campaign; I’m maxed out). I still see some chance Democrats can avoid a total catastrophe if she takes it to Denver. If these fools are truly hellbent on destroying the Democratic party, make them do it on TV for all to see.

What I did yesterday.

My timing was a little off - I wish I had done it several days ago - but yesterday I printed “2209” in the largest font I had on a single adhesive address label, affixed it to the latest fundraising racket the DNC sent me snail-mail about (“matching contributions” or something), and returned in the postage-paid envelope.

I’ve been reading all these loooooong manifestos and open letters people are composing about all this daily drama, but on the simple issue of what 100% is, it’s painfully clear that the number is not 2025. And that’s all I have to say about that.

And since it was sent back with my name and address as they sent it to me - a former regular DNC contributor - I hope it will have some impact. Hey, all I’ve got at this point is my vote, my name, my history, and a modest amount of cash. I’m trying to use these increasingly irrelevant resources as best I can…

Mission Accomplished

Who has some PhotoShop skills around here? We need a picture of Obama with a “Mission Accomplished” banner behind him.

Oh, and if you have the "All Shook Up" album....

You just may be too much of a Cheap Trick fan… ;)

intentionally pissing off voters

he needs—he better not do this.

maybe they’re just floating it to see the reaction?

Eek, the more I read that thing the worse it gets....

Mr. Plouffe writes. “While those scenarios may be entertaining, they are not legitimate and will not be considered legitimate by this campaign or its millions of supporters, volunteers, and donors.”

Since when does the Obama campaign and/or its million of supporters, volunteers and donors determine what is legitimate? There are established rules, which we are all painfully aware of, that “determine” the legitimacy of this race. Mr. Dean, any thoughts….? Mr. Dean??

I love this job!

All Shook Up?

My husband might have that. He’s the Cheap Trick fan in our house; I was along for the ride :-) I very briefly considered titling this post “He’s A Whore” but I thought that pushed the envelope a bit too much.

Perhaps Obama can play “Surrender” on the campaign trail. That’s what he seems to want everyone to do.

Gives them too much credit

I think it shows they really don’t give a damn about voters if they’re not willing to sit tight until the Rules & Bylaws Committee meets on May 31 and the primaries are over on June 3.

What happens if Obama loses WV and KY? Say, “never mind”?

My dream Obama-related CT setlist...

Any thoughts Howard Dean Has

he will not share publicly. I remember he did a lot of work to get his supporters to back Kerry. It took a couple of months, at least, and people were really dragging their feet about it. That’s where the “Dated Dean, Married Kerry” stuff came from. (Later it was “Dated Dean, Married Kerry, Woke Up With Bush.”)

I’m hoping at some point Howard will share the benefit of his experience with Obama but even if he does, Obama won’t listen.

Don't forget

“I Want You to Want Me”

That's brilliant.

Who has some PhotoShop skills around here? We need a picture of Obama with a “Mission Accomplished” banner behind him.

I’m crazy busy with work (too bad I can’t take a political obsession holiday), otherwise I’d do it, but someone really should — it perfectly captures the arrogance and sense of entitlement* that Barry exudes.

*Yes, I said it — being born to a teen-aged mother, or being abandoned by your father doesn’t immunize one from feeling entitled — in fact it could very possibly enhance the belief that the world owes you one.

Where Are Those 50 Super Delegates?

Seriously, Obama had 50 SDs in his pocket that would come out and end this thing when it was time. Well, everyone has told me this thing is over, so where are they?

At first I was angry about the May 20th thing and the “Fuck You Voters” Memo, but now I see it as a hopeful sign. Why? Because a candidate who really has won, doesn’t do this. He doesn’t have to. He would wait until the end of voting, say gracious things about Clinton, and then be crowned the nominee. He’s doing this because he’s not sure if he waits he’ll be the nominee. And despite the big popular vote run up in NC, they seem dead-set determined that the popular vote not be the deteminative factor.

What I can’t figure out is why? No, really. While I hold out faint hope (growing brighter this morning), even I agree Obama is likely to be the nominee. So why the lekking?

numerical reality check

all the talk since may 7 about obama’s great victory and his certain coronation as the democratic nominee is nothing more than very loud, very extensive, pre-emptive p.r.

how truly precarious obama’s lead over clinton is,

is indicated by the numbers below

and by his campaign managers’ decision to announce an obama “victory” on may 31

and by efforts by the obama team to preempt any challlneges clinto might make on florida, michigan, or the texas caucuses

as “extra-legal”.

from www.diversityj.com

2008 democratic primary election results (updated may 7, 2008)

total popular vote with florida and michigan counted in:

obama 16.401 million

clinton 16.313 million

difference ~90,000 votes

obama’s lead as a percent of toyal votes cast:

0.28% (that’s less than 1%)

total poular vote with florida and michigan omitted:

obama 15.824 million

clinton 15.113 million

obama’s lead as a percent of total votes cast:

2.26%

the obama team and the corporate and web media who support them are trying to paint an extremely close race, where obama’s entire lead is a function of his being the favorite son of black democrats,

into a resounding, inevitiable victory.

more smoke and mirrors from the obama team.

BDB

You’re asking a similar question to the one Craig Crawford asked yesterday:

If Democratic superdelegates truly want Hillary Rodham Clinton to quit the nomination race, why don’t they just publicly endorse Barack Obama and get it over with? There are more than enough of them to make up the difference needed to give him the winning majority.

~snip~

Ever since losing the Ohio Primary two months ago, the Obama campaign has been fanning the vapors that a victory-clinching mass of superdelegates are waiting in the wings to endorse him. Now would seem to be the time to prove it — before Clinton wins lopsided majorities in upcoming states like West Virginia next week and again revs up her momentum.

http://blogs.cqpolitics.com/trailmix/200…

My apologies if someone else has already posted this. On a related question, does the search feature not work for anyone, or just me?

Good point, BDB

And sums up what I meant about a “pre-emptive victory.” Kinda like this:

Sen. Barack Obama , D-Ill., took his campaign for presidential superdelegate votes to the House floor Thursday, triggering complaints from some supporters of rival Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton , D-N.Y.

“I have a question in my mind whether it’s kosher, whether it’s ethical. I don’t think he should be doing this on the House floor. This is the first time I remember him being on our floor,” said Grace Napolitano, D-Calif., a staunch Clinton supporter.

“It’s unusual. He’s actively soliciting the votes of superdelegates on the floor,” said Alyson Schwartz, D-Pa., another Clinton backer.

Obama’s explanation: “Oh, I wasn’t campaigning. I was saying hello.

“I just wanted to make sure that I gave an update not only to my supporters, but to those who are trying to figure out what direction to go in,” he said. “Obviously some have been anxious about some of the sense of division in the party, and I just wanted to assure them that whatever happens, we will be coming together.”

Son of a bitch. “I was saying hello.” On the fucking floor of the House of Representatives.

BDBlue, your selective

BDBlue, your selective quoting is more than a bit desperate. Here’s the full quote:

We believe it is exceedingly unlikely Senator Clinton will overtake our lead in the popular vote and in fact lost ground on that measure last night. However, the popular vote is a deeply flawed and illegitimate metric for deciding the nominee – since each campaign based their strategy on the acquisition of delegates. More importantly, the rules of the nomination are predicated on delegates, not popular vote.

Just as the Presidential election in November will be decided by the electoral college, not popular vote, the Democratic nomination is decided by delegates.

If we believed the popular vote was somehow the key measurement, we would have campaigned much more intensively in our home state of Illinois and in all the other populous states, in the pursuit of larger raw vote totals. But it is not the key measurement.

It is no more a “fuck you” to voters than is the existence of the electoral college. All of these complaints about the rules this late in the game are pathetic (2209, if Democrats chose their nominee like Republicans do, etc.) The rules were in place before the first ballot was cast. 2024.5 is the number of delegates needed to win. Deal with it.

George Bush challenged the recount in Florida

on the grounds that it could impugn his legitimacy. This is staggering to me. Obama/Axelrod are importing all of the sociopathy of the Republican party into the Democratic party.

I was rereading the paragraph on Obama wanting to vote for Roberts because if he was president, he wouldn’t want his nominees opposed on ideological grounds. As if opposing the appointment of a judge on ideological grounds is necessarily a bad thing. He wants to appoint who he wants to appoint and ideology (pro-choice ideology?) isn’t going to stand in his way.

I’m starting to think Obama is a flat out sociopath. I don’t understand what it is this group this is thinking. I bet there are some ugly stories in this man’s past.

It may be selective, but the full quote isn't helpful to Obama.

Especially this part:

Just as the Presidential election in November will be decided by the electoral college, not popular vote, the Democratic nomination is decided by delegates.

It probably doesn’t help Obama’s argument to remind people of the electoral college given his poor performance in so many of the states that will be necessary for the Democrat to win using the electoral college.

The Lekking to End All Lekkings

That’s what this is. Pushing the Hillary is broke meme (maybe she is, but I think they’ll do what they have to to continue, in for a penny, in for a pound).

Notice rootless and markg8 are back and not to make nice or seek unity, but to insult Hillary, tell us it’s over and get in line.

Clinton is still a long shot, but as BTD points out, Obama hasn’t sown up The Math.

barack's money machine and the superds' dance

want to know why clinton’s vastly greater knowledge of the democratic party and her vastly greater experience with the executive branch in state and national government

is rarely mentioned by many superdelegates

and apparently of no consequence in their deliberations about which candidate to support?

then read the latest issue of the atlantic magazine.

focus on the article about barack obama’s extraordinary money machine.

it has raised over $240 million to date.

this, my friends, is the new “face” of the democratic party,

this is the “new” politics -

a huge pot of gold at the end of the obama rainbow that professional democratics politicians can’t wait to get their hands

to use in state and congresional elections.

the democratic party is about to remake itself in the image of a very rich jackass,

who cares if the nation may have to swallow an inexperienced or incompetent president to seal the deal.

bonus: notice the connections

between nancy pelosi and the obama money machine

and between howard dean’s old campaign and the obama money machine.

money talks; the national interest walks.

Another song for Barry

the 50 supers was always a lie--

and they used it twice already, no?

And i hear that many of the uncommitted supers in the House are freshmen from swing districts who don’t believe he’ll help them at all to get reelected.
