Who's crying now, JJJr?

Paragraph 115(a) of Fitzgerald's indictment:

In a recorded conversation on October 31, 2008, ROD BLAGOJEVICH described an earlier approach by an associate of Senate Candidate Five as follows: "We were approached 'pay to play.' That, you know, he'd raise me 500 grand. An emissary came. Then the other guy would raise a million, if I made him (Senate Candidate 5) a Senator."

Chicago Tribune today:

As Gov. Rod Blagojevich was trying to pick Illinois' next U.S. senator, businessmen with ties to both the governor and U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. discussed raising at least $1 million for Blagojevich's campaign as a way to encourage him to pick Jackson for the job, the Tribune has learned.

Blagojevich made an appearance at an Oct. 31 luncheon meeting at the India House restaurant in Schaumburg sponsored by Oak Brook businessman Raghuveer Nayak, a major Blagojevich supporter who also has fundraising and business ties to the Jackson family, according to several attendees and public records....

The two businessmen who spoke to the Tribune on the condition of anonymity said they did so because they were afraid of repercussions in the close-knit and politically active Indian business community.

One said Nayak and Bedi told him and others of their plan to help Jackson.

The second said he overheard Nayak and Bedi discussing plans with Bhatt, the Joliet pharmacist.

"Raghu said he needed to raise a million for Rod to make sure Jesse got the seat," the second businessman said. "He said, 'I can raise half of it, $500,000.' The idea was that the other two would help raise the rest."

So, $1,000,000 in the indictment from Senate Candidate 5, $1,000,000 discussed by supporters of JJr. Not proof, but certainly.... Interesting. The Tribune's disclaimer:

Despite the parallels, it could not be determined if the actions outlined by the Tribune were the same as those discussed in the FBI affidavit that accompanied the pay-to-play charges against Blagojevich and his chief of staff, John Harris. But the details, gathered from more than a dozen interviews, make clear that some political operatives were connecting support for Blagojevich to his choice for the Senate seat.

And look, I know it can't be true. Why? Because Jesse "Fake Tears" Jackson, Jr.'s denial was emotional! So emotional he couldn't answer questions. Then again, what would I know? I'm a racist.

NOTE More on Nayak:

Nayak owns a series of surgery centers on Chicago's North Side. He also founded and until recently retained an ownership stake in a drug testing laboratory with millions of dollars in Illinois public aid contracts.

Jackson Sr.

I wonder what part he's played in all of this. The article you quote mentions the "Jackson family" and it was reported on Wednesday that Jackson Sr. had retained a lawyer after Blago was arrested. Hm.

Jackson Sr knows any investigation can go just about anywhere--

Even if one's just answering questions. It's the wise person being interviewed who has a lawyer. Too easy to not remember everything exactly and to say things one way, then slightly differently later on. Our memories are actually restored and may change a bit when we've discussed them, brought them out to think about.

Anyway, you may have a point. But getting a lawyer, especially for Jackson Sr. ,who's been put through several mills in his career, would be wise and probably usual and customary.

"Jackson Family"

Apparently, the "family" supposedly involved in this is Jr's brother, Jonathan. I'd have a hard time believing that Sr. was involved in any of this, to be honest.

But, we've always been at war with Eastasia...

I am not, I repeat *not*

implying anything about Sr. re: this episode.

I just wouldn't vouch that he's especially pure:

Jackson’s weft of social-service organizations operating under the aegis of the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition brought in seventeen million dollars in revenue last year; almost all of it came from American business. From the beginning, Jackson’s economic campaign has been somewhat tenuous morally, mainly because his dealings with business look so much like shakedowns. As it happens, a meaningful portion of wealth has been redistributed in the direction of Jackson himself, allowing him to maintain a measure of comfort in what is, by any standard, a gruelling schedule. He is on the road two hundred and fifty days a year. He travels in limousines and private jets, and he stays in hotel suites when he is away from his homes in Chicago and Washington. Travel expenses reported by Jackson last year [the piece was written in 2001] amounted to more than a half million dollars…

Good reading! Favorite quote: What could go wrong?
Beyond war, inflation, the end of the technology/productivity wave, and financial collapse, we think the most potent and short-term threat would be societies demanding a more ‘equitable’ share of wealth.
