Because the Republicans will never, ever stage a false-flag terror strike in October 2008 in order to elect him, they loathe him that much.
Heck, they might even not steal the election for him!
That leaves the continuity of government option still live, of course, but that's a little more dangerous and radical.
For once, the iron law of institutions works for us!

Huckabee's win a victory for McCain
Try to keep up with the narratives, for gosh sakes.
"A small group of thoughtful people could change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." - Margaret Mead

God-Squad Pods?
"Because the Republicans will never, ever stage a false-flag terror strike in October 2008 in order to elect him, they loathe him that much."
Maybe the Republicans won't give Huckabee a Holy Terror goose, but are there roving squads of, say, Air Force Academy graduates who might lend a hand?
I'd be less nervous if people as mean, prejudiced, and ignorant as Huckabee didn't float to the top of any pond, no matter how small or scummy.
Exactly right
We should not make the mistake of thinking the enemy is a single monolithic entity.
The Company, the CIA, the NSA, even Blackwater and DynCorp are all composed of dozens of factions, each angling over each other for the Ring of Power. Even within each faction are rivalries and secret liasons. Emergent conspiracy is and remains the operative term.
Al Qaeda has the nukes if it chooses to use them, both the Crusader and the Jihadist version, and believe it, there are more than a few Major Kongs willing to ride that hot babe to armageddon for the Cause.
