One day I’ll post the amusing story of How I Learned to Hate
the “Science” of Psychology, but for now I’ll direct your attention to the “serious” publication Pyschology Today which decided to lower the reputation of the field even further by publishing the following Deep Insights about how evolution “makes” us act and think:
1. Men like blond bombshells (and women want to look like them)
…
4. Most suicide bombers are Muslim
5. Having sons reduces the likelihood of divorce
6. Beautiful people have more daughtersetc.
I don’t have time to do the takedown, but luckily someone else has. Short version: Psychology today is bunk, utter tripe, and if there is anything worth reading in that publication, it’s blackened by association with this trash.

Escaping the Frame
or it’s blanched bone white by association! “blackened” is a beautiful thing! :)

Back in the day ...
Waaaay back in the day, an actor acquaintance of mine did a TV commercial for Psychology Today addressing the then-newly discovered AIDS epidemic. It began with him saying, in a cheery voice dictated by the ad agency, “Now that sex can be deadly …” and went on to more or less promise help for frightened boomers wanting to salvage something from the newly scary singles bar scene. I don’t know anyone in the profession who takes the mag seriously, or has for the past three decades or so, and I don’t know anyone who would subscribe to it if it wasn’t part of their APA dues. FWIW, etc.
nezua- i like the way "black" is flexible, in the right mind
or mouth. along the lines of embracing/reclaiming “dyke,” i like the idea that to “blacken” can have both negative and positive connotations (you want to make “black” synonymous with evil? fine. here are some (not black folks) being “evil.”) i would that the term “whiten” were the same, so in that i agree with you.
weldon- so why then does the APA still keep the magazine as their official publication? like the descent of JAMA, which i read, the reduction in intellectual and academic standards couldn’t happen, if members didn’t shrug and fail to take professional action to restore them. sorry, the APA members may not take it “seriously,” but tripe like this also shouldn’t be published. call me when there is some action and outrage in the psych community. i’m not holding my breath.
Well, we do have whitewash
And whited sepulchre.
And, of course, the white whale.
I don’t think the answer is, as it were to “clean up our language” but to make every part of it as vivid as possible.
I forgot: The White House!
Oh, the shame….
No authoritarians were tortured in the writing of this post.
PT isn't psychology
I don’t think that any real psychologists take “Psychology Today” seriously. It’s the epitome of pop psych - sometimes a kernel of truth, but usually laughable. Don’t blame this on psychology; blame it on the people who buy that magazine - and more generally, on people who are too lazy to look beyond ideas they already ’know’ to be true.
