If you have "no place to go," come here!

Why the 1% likes high unemployment

Izvestia:

Confronting the worst job market in decades, many college graduates who expected to land paid jobs are turning to unpaid internships to try to get a foot in an employer’s door.

People with no jobs are desperate to get them. People with jobs are desperate to keep them. Keeps wages low!

Also, too, servants are cheap:

But Ms. Reyes soon soured on the [intern] experience. She often worked 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., five days a week. “They had me running out to buy them lunch,” she said. “They had me cleaning out the closets, emptying out the past season’s items.”

And what's Obama's solution? Lowered interest rates on Ms. Reyes student loans. Wowsers. Clue stick, asshole: Lowered interest rates don't help when you've got no income.

What we need is a debt jubilee and a jobs guarantee. Or, ya know, JUST GIVE US THE MONEY. It works for banksters, so why not us?

NOTE Link via Atrios, who seems reluctant to draw the obvious conclusion.

I need to find a way to get this across to my fellow young people. If I'm going to be some higher up's butt monkey, I'd better be getting something out of it.

I've previously quipped that drug dealers don't sell anything; the product sells itself. No need to have sales or marketing ...

The American Dream is, apparently, a lot like heroin and it appears to be next to impossible to grow up in this country and not be surrounded by junkies who make sure the next generation is hooked too. The unpaid internship in its present form is pretty much like sucking dick in an alley to get high.

And like a smack dealer, the politicians and titans of biznis* don't care if you steal your grandmother's engagement ring and pawn it for $10 to get a hit. They're plenty happy to see you do whatever degrading thing you must to keep their cash flow rolling in. I just can't decide if the American Dream resembles crack or smack more closely. For the former, people will do some violent shit and act crazy to get it; junkies aren't generally violent but sneaky thieves, and like people with a hit of the American Dream are just nodded out and as pliable as humanly possible.

*I chose this word because in the 90's when the free market came to Russia, they simply took the English word, but a loose and pronunciation based transliteration produced "biznis". That form of the word took on connotations of organized crime, which i think is appropriate here.

Here's a little old school N.W.A. All you have to is imagine Senators, Presidents and bankers with the title role (NSFW):

... (a) that permanently high DISemployment is accepted policy on both sides of the aisle, and that (b) Obama supports it.

"Asshoies" doesn't exactly translate to that.
