[Oops. Alert reader George points out in comments that it’s Monaghan.]
What a shame. We can but hope that Monahan loses many more millions on his doomed and delusional project. Apparently, the Christianists have fallen to fighting among themselves:
In April of 2007, the Association of Ave María Faculty, which represented a vast majority of Ave María’s faculty, publicly stated that the AMSL Dean had employed “threats and retaliation to try to silence members of the faculty from voicing concerns about his leadership and that of [the Chair of Ave Maria Law School’s Board].” They further alleged financial punishment, the monitoring of faculty email and voice mail, and “manipulation of the promotion and tenure system.” They also reported that “[o]ne tenured faculty member has been repeatedly threatened with termination based upon bizarre allegations” and that “junior faculty members have been threatened that their careers would be harmed if they associate with disfavored tenured faculty.”
So, what’s their point? Didn’t they know what they were getting into? This is how the wingers behave to everybody else, so what made the professors think they were special?
And does Monaghan sound like Snow Crash’s L. Bob Rife, or what?

Of these types of law schools — the cost for books is so much less.
You only need to buy one book.
Or grab one from the bedstand of a motel…
The Bill of Rights is a born rebel. It reeks with sedition. In every clause it shakes its fist in the face of constituted authority… . it is the one guaranty of human freedom to the American people. - Frank Irving Cobb
Is ThisThe One founded by the Pizza Guy?
Domino’s? Wasn’t this part of a whole town he was founding? I did click through but the discussion was too in medias res for me figure out if I’d got Monahan pegged correctly.
That pizza of such vile quality could have made someone a billionaire fills me with despair about our country.
We need to restore America’s taste buds, along with constitutional government.
Yeah, that's Monahan
Yes, there’s a whole town, too. Gack. They’re calling it “White Columns” or some such…

High Holy Pizza
With a name like Domino it has to be blessed a whole lot. Before eating, preferably.

A Quick Study, But A Slow Learner
Tragically, Monaghan's "Celebration FL" was supposed to be
a sterling example of New Urbanism, where you have residential/commercial/office (pretty much everything but heavy industry) all mixed together so as to reduce if not eliminate the need for cars or indeed motorized transportation of any sort.
I read something about this way, way back when so I don’t remember a lot of details. As best I recall the architect/urban planner who got hooked into the deal more or less knowingly sold his soul to the Devil (Monaghan) figuring it was the only way to get his dream community built. It would then be a living working walking example of what a town could be like, with the advantage of being built from “scratch” rather than having to tear down and rebuild half of an already existent car dependent city.
Now it sounds like it’s going to do the exact opposite, for reasons having nothing to do with New Urbanism but rather with Recycled Christian Feudalism. Sad. Proving that when negotiating with the Devil one should set the price very high and not settle for some piddlyass lottery ticket.
Monaghan, not Monahan
Sorry to be picky, but I worked for the guy for almost a decade, on the “non-pizza” side of the house. The right spelling is “Monaghan” … here in Ann Arbor there’s a wonderful fish market named “Monahan” that doesn’t deserve the guilt by association. The last I’d heard, the name of the town was slated to be the same as the University and the (sic) Law School: Ave Maria
Damn, you're right
See eg The New Yorker. Can’t change the head, at this point, but I’ll correct the links.
Embarassingly, I “corrected” the post to remove the “g”…

Hah, managed to fix my comment
Thanks for the tip Mr. Armstrong, I have corrected my comment above. I’m medium-fanatical about spelling most of the time but just fall to pieces with names. Had to practically quit mentioning the second largest city in Pennsylvania because I could never remember to put the “h” on the end of Pittsburg….
