The reason this is important is because we must never forget that the essential difference between today's Left and Right. The Right takes care of its own, no matter what their crimes. Wingnuts will seek to clothe Rumsfeld, architech of a failed war and one of those who brought torture into our daily American vocabulary, with false glories designed to rehabilitate his legacy. This is so that someday down the line, either in name or in deed, Rummy will be welcomed back into the ranks of "legitimate" Beltway leaders, as well as his policies. He is not and they are not. Everything about his tenure is a disgrace, and his name should be permanently associated with "failure" Here at Corrente, we will never forgive, and never forget. Claremont "Statesmanship" Award.

"Leader" is another word we have to stamp out
It's derived, no doubt, from the sort of cheap and often Christianist
"leadership" seminars that executives go to, or to the books on the same theme that one sees by the thousands in airport bookstores. The concept is also uncomfortably close to fuhrerprinzip.
I don't want a leader, I want a fucking President--maybe one with some leadership skills, among many other skills.
Same thing with Rummy. He is not and never could have been a "legitimate" leader, because legitimacy is conferred on the man by his office, not by his personal characteristics. See fuhrerprinzip again.
This one is insidious. One remembers that the Christianist Embassy guys target "leaders"--but that's because they want to make the government over in their image.
