She shows up to auditions perky as can be, and completely oblivious to the mockery that is being meted out to her by the auditors she tortures with her repeated attempts to “make it big!” (Fame! I wanna live forever!) She is undaunted by criticism and just feels with all her heart that she is destined for greatness — can’t you feel it? (I wanna learn how to fly! High!) She took her parents’ praise to heart and knows that as long as you believe in yourself, you can do anything! (Fame! Baby remember my name!) She knows of her true talent, and with a little pluck and a lot of luck, she’ll be on her way — you just have to believe!

She is especially vulnerable to chants of “Yes, we can!”

Maybe five will actually “make it” in any given year. Then there are a few more that will make the chorus line or become “extras” and will hang around for a while before giving up.

Pro sports is like that for men. Most HS athletes never reach college or a “farm team.” The vast majority of college/farm team players never make the pros, most that make the pros only stay a year or two as back-up or scout team players.
